The signing of WR Brian Hartline has not stopped the Browns from looking at other receivers. Cecil Shorts remains in the picture and another name which hasn’t been mentioned much is Michael Crabtree. The issue with Crabtree, not only from a Browns perspective but league-wide, is his belief that he is an 8-million plus receiver……won’t happen in Cleveland.
The two-year deal Hartline agreed to with the Browns was a joint effort between the team and player. Hartline left money on the table as the Browns stepped up their game to land the Ohio native.
With an obvious need at NT, the Browns have been consistent in their discussions with players at the position leading up to the free agent player signing period. The Browns have spoken with the agents for Dan Williams (UFA-ARZ), Terrance Knighton (UFA-DEN), Damon Harrison (RFA-NYJ), Patrick Sims (UFA-OAK) and Cedric Thornton (RFA-PHI). There is a belief the Browns within the Cleveland organization that they may land one of the free agent targets.
Looking for a pass rusher, the Browns again have been busy talking with reps for numerous OLB/DE types. The Browns have spoken to the following: Trent Cole (PHI), Derrick Morgan (UFA-TENN), Brian Orakpo (UFA-WASH), Adrian Clayborn (UFA-TB), Jason Worilds (UFA-PIT), Justin Durant (UFA-DAL). There has been scuttle the Browns have spoken with the agent for OLB Akeem Ayers, but confirmation has not been successful. Again, the Browns believe they are close to adding a pass rusher type early in free agency.
The Browns were interested in DE/OLB Jerry Hughes (UFA-BUF), but very early in the process determined the pass rusher was focused on remaining in Buffalo.
The Browns have not excluded tendered TE Charles Clay (MIA) as a target in free agency, as the Browns seek a down-field presence, an H-back type in the passing game from the position. The Browns have also spoken to the agents for Ed Dickson (UFA- CAR), James Casey (PHIL), Virgil Green (UFA-DEN) and Jordan Cameron (UFA-CLE). The Browns have stayed in contact with Cameron’s camp as the free agent surveys the free agency market.
The Browns have not had discussions with the available QBs in the free agent player market to date.
The Browns have displayed interest in RBs capable of coming out of the backfield, one player which has been noted is RB Shane Vereen (UFA-NE). TheOBR has gained contradictory information regarding potential interest in RB C.J. Spiller (UFA-Buf)
