"BEREA, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns on Saturday signed DL Christian Tupou and WR Josh Lenz. General Manager Ray Farmer made the announcement.
The 6-4, 305-pound Tupou is in his second NFL season out of Southern California. He spent nine weeks on the Browns’ practice squad last year and appeared in five games with the Bears in 2013. Tupou was waived by the Browns on May 11. He graduated from Grant High School in Sacramento.
Lenz is 6-0, 195 pounds and officially in his first NFL season out of Iowa State. Originally signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent in 2013, he has spent time on the practice squads’ of Seattle (three weeks in 2013) and Indianapolis (eight weeks in 2013 and all of 2014). A native of Debuque, Iowa, Lenza graduated from Hempstead High School."
The Browns obviously have some comfort with Tupou based on his time on their practice squad last year. The 26 year old Tupou had 3 tackles in his 5 games with the Bears in 2013. He only had 37 tackles in college after missing all of 2010 season with knee injury.
The Browns had a ton injury issues last year on the defensive line and rotated a number of players through on the line. They didn't call up Tupou nor did they keep him on their practice squad. He fills a roster spot but faces an uphill battle to make the team after the Browns added a number of players to the D-Line.
Here is a Draft Profile of Tupou coming out of USC:
Lenz joins an interesting group of receivers for the Browns. While fans aren't happy with the lack of a "true #1" receiver, the depth is solid. Lenz had 96 catches for 1,213 yards and 10 TDs in his college career at Iowa State. Lenz has speed, with reports of under a 4.4 forty yard dash coming out of college.
With Dwayne Bowe, Brian Hartline, Andrew Hawkins, Taylor Gabriel and Vince Mayle almost certain to have locked up 5 spots on the WR depth chart, Lenz will have an up hill climb to make the roster. Travis Benjamin and Marlon Moore provide special teams contributions and the Browns like some of their Undrafted Free Agent additions as well.
