The Cleveland Browns used the 8th overall pick on Justin Gilbert in last year's NFL Draft. His first season was limited due to an undisclosed personal issue as well as struggles related to his work ethic.
With Joe Haden, Tramon Williams, K'Waun Williams, Pierre Desir, Charles Gaines and Gilbert forming a very talented group at corner. Next year Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, who was mentioned as a 1st Round pick before injuring his knee, will join that group.
Where does that leave Gilbert? He is looking better than last year, according to other players and our guys at Training Camp, but does he have a role in the defensive backfield? Is it possible for him to reach his 1st Round potential but still not get much time on the field due to the other talent on the roster?
Thankfully for the Browns, their depth protects them if Gilbert busts. Unfortunately for Gilbert that depth could keep him from changing the narrative about his early career. Currently the word bust is hanging around.
Its possible that the Browns use Gilbert as a punt returner, something he did in college, and maybe in creative roles as a third safety.
In our Scout Now video I give my thoughts on his role and the hopes for him.
What are you hoping for from Justin Gilbert?
