CLEVELAND—The Browns have over 20 percent of the 90 man roster inactive for the second preseason game with eight players from the secondary on the sideline. That amounts to 19 players.
Joe Haden (hamstring), Tashaun Gipson (calf), Duke Johnson (hamstring), K’Waun Williams (hamstring), Barkevious Mingo (knee) and Dwayne Bowe (hamstring) are all projected to be either starters or key contributors in the regular season are sitting this one out.
Terrelle Pryor, who re-injured his hamstring in his first practice back Monday also is out.
On Tuesday, Mike Pettine said the coaching staff is looking to next Saturday’s game with Tampa Bay to get many of the injured players back.
“We feel like we are close to getting some of our guys back, and also with the long break to Tampa, that is kind of a nice luxury to have,” Pettine said. “What is it, nine or 10 days to Tampa? We will get some of our guys back. We feel we will be much better off headed into that [game], assuming we can get through Thursday night pretty clean.”
The rest of the inactives for the Browns include: QB Connor Shaw (right thumb), WR Marlon Moore (ribs), RB Shaun Draughn (hand), DB Justin Gilbert (hip flexor), DB Joe Haden (hamstring), DB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (knee), DB Pierre Desir (hamstring), DB Robert Nelson Jr. (hamstring), RB Duke Johnson Jr. (hamstring), DB K’Waun Williams (abdominal), DB Tashaun Gipson (calf), DB De’Ante Saunders (calf), RB Glenn Winston (knee), FB Luke Lundy (concussion), FB Malcolm Johnson (shoulder), LB Barkevious Mingo, WR Dwayne Bowe (hamstring), TE Randall Telfer (foot), WR Terrelle Pryor (hamstring).
Jordan Poyer starts in place of Gipson and rookie Charles Gaines is to start in place of Haden.
The good news is three players who missed the first preseason game will play against Buffalo. Those players are Joe Thomas, Phil Taylor, Billy Winn
Meanwhile, the Bills had 14 players inactive, including five running backs and four wide receivers. Headliners for Buffalo sitting the game out are: RB LeSean McCoy, RB Fred Jackson, WR Sammy Watkins and WR Percy Harvin.
