Browns Keep Just Two Quarterbacks

By releasing Thad Lewis and Pat Devlin, the Browns are confident that Johnny Manziel's elbow is ready to go

BEREA--As the Browns made 22 moves to get down to the mandatory 53-man roster—which included releasing quarterbacks Thad Lewis and Pat Devlin—it appears that Johnny Manziel’s sore elbow has been cleared. Josh McCown and Manziel are the only two quarterbacks on the roster, as of now. Devlin could be re-signed to the practice squad and former quarterback-converted to wide receiver, Terrelle Pryor could be the third quarterback as he made the final roster.

Pryor made the roster despite only a few plays in the preseason after injuring his hamstring on the first day of pads in training camp.

The other players released were: defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel and Dylan Winn, defensive backs Robert Nelson, Jr, Kendall James, De’Ante Saunders, Landon Feichter and  Joe Rankin, offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, Darrien Miller, Erle Ladson, Vinston Painter, Eric Olsen and Karim Barton, wide receivers Vince Mayle, Josh Lenz and Darius Jennings, running backs Shaun Draughn, Tim Flanders and linebackers Hayes Pullard and Mike Reilly.

The Browns currently have eight of their 12 draft picks from this season on the roster. They released two 2015 draft choices in Mayle (4th round) and Pullard (7th round). Two other choices, tight end Randall Telfer (6th round) and cornerback Ifo Ekrpe-Olomu (7th round) were already placed on season ending injured reserve.

Mayle was a fourth-round draft pick this year and the only wide receiver the Browns have drafted in the past two years under Ray Farmer.

Lewis was in his fourth NFL season and his second tour of duty with the Browns. He did not play in a game in 2014 after starting five games for the Bills in 2013, while Mike Pettine was the defensive coordinator. He was with the Browns in 2011-12. Lewis played the majority of the final preseason game against the Bears and threw an interception for a touchdown and fumbled the ball after being sacked.

The current roster breakdowns has 11 defensive backs, eight linebackers, eight defensive linemen, seven wide receivers, six offensive linemen, four running backs, four tight ends, three specialists and two quarterbacks. They have nine rookies, including eight draft choices. Tight end E.J. Bibbs is the only undrafted rookie free agent to make the roster.

Several players were with the team last year including Nelson, Jr., McDaniel, Draughn, Painter and Barton. Nelson appeared in seven games, while Draughn played in four, Painter three and McDaniel one.

The Browns can add up to 10 players to the practice squad if the player clears waivers. Candidates for the practice squad are: Mayle, Lenz, Jennings, Nelson Jr., James, Saunders, Feichter, Rankin, McDaniel, Painter, Flanders, Devlin, Reilly and Winn.
