BEREA—Running back Duke Johnson status for Sunday’s season opener with the New York Jets is in the hands of the NFL’s protocol for concussions. As of Monday, Johnson had not yet been cleared to practice. The Browns are hoping their rookie third-round draft pick from the University of Miami will be cleared to go by this weekend.
Johnson was a big part of the Browns plans in a run-oriented offense and a pass receiver on third downs coming out of the backfield. However, a hamstring injury held him out for most of the preseason and then a concussion against Tampa Bay in the third preseason game has sidelined him since. Currently, Isaiah Crowell is the only healthy running back on the roster with Shaun Draughn also expected to be elevated from the practice squad whether Johnson is cleared to play or not.
