The OBR NFL Power Rankings: Week 4

Week 4 is in the books and our OBR experts have finished their NFL Power Rankings. This week we started to see a major separation between teams. There are some very good teams and a whole lot of not so impressive teams in the NFL so far. Our rankings, and some thoughts on where there are clear divides are below.

Rank Team Last Rank W or L Record Jared Barry Lane Andrea Rick Fred Hayden Average High Low
1 New England 1 BYE 3 - 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1.00 1 1
2 Green Bay 2 W 4 - 0 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2.00 2 2
3 Denver 4 W 4 - 0 4 3 3 6 5 3 3 3.86 3 6
4 Cincinnati 5 W 4 - 0 3 4 5 4 3 4 5 4.00 3 5
5 Arizona 3 L 3 - 1 6 5 4 3 7 5 8 5.43 3 8
6 Atlanta 9 W 4 - 0 5 6 6 5 4 6 6 5.43 4 6
7 Carolina 13 W 4 - 0 9 8 8 7 6 8 4 7.14 4 9
8 Seattle 6 W 2 - 2 7 7 7 9 7 7 7 7.29 7 9
9 Jets 11 W 3 - 1 8 10 9 8 8 9 9 8.71 8 10

Note: A distinct difference between the top level teams and the rest of the league.
Figuring out that break is interesting and breaking just above the Steelers just felt right to do.
The Jets may not fit with the other 8 teams but have played very well.
Atlanta and Carolina are the other surprises in this group but are undefeated and,
especially in the Falcons case, are showing they might belong.

10 Pittsburgh 10 L 2 - 2 10 9 13 10 9 13 12 10.86 9 13
11 Dallas 8 L 2 - 2 11 11 11 11 11 12 11 11.14 11 12
12 Buffalo 7 L 2 - 2 12 12 12 12 10 11 10 11.29 10 12
13 Indianapolis 12 W 2 - 2 13 13 10 13 12 10 13 12.00 10 13
14 San Diego 14 W 2 - 2 15 14 15 14 13 14 14 14.14 13 15
15 Minnesota 17 L 2 - 2 18 15 17 15 15 19 16 16.43 15 19
16 St. Louis 19 W 2 - 2 14 16 19 17 14 15 21 16.57 14 21
17 Kansas City 15 L 1 - 3 17 20 16 16 16 16 17 16.86 16 20

Note: The next few teams are still good, with maybe the Giants
joining them as teams we think could pick up the pace if things go better.
Big Ben and Andrew Luck being out hurts their teams but both have
issues on defense even with their stud QBs. The Cowboys will struggle
without Tony Romo but have a much more balanced team.
Buffalo and St. Louis are held up by their defenses while the Vikings and
Chargers are good but limited. Trusting "Checkdown Charlie" Alex Smith is always a gamble.

18 Baltimore 18 W 1 - 3 16 22 18 20 17 18 15 18.00 15 22
19 Giants 22 W 2 - 2 19 18 14 22 19 20 20 18.86 14 22
20 Oakland 20 L 2 - 2 20 17 20 18 20 21 19 19.29 17 21
21 Philadelphia 16 L 1 - 3 21 21 22 21 18 17 18 19.71 17 22
22 Washington 29 W 2 - 2 23 19 21 19 25 26 26 22.71 19 26
23 Houston 24 L 1 - 3 24 23 25 24 22 22 23 23.29 22 25
24 Cleveland 26 L 1 - 3 25 25 26 25 26 24 25 25.14 24 26

Note: These teams have shown something, or at least enough, that they might have a small
chance at the playoffs. Obviously very limited teams but that is the state of the NFL at this point.
The Browns lost and still rose two spots in the rankings. Watching the other games around the
NFL makes it clear that other teams might have better QBs or weapons but they are just as
bad or worse than the Browns overall. Realisticaly only the Ravens, Giants, Raiders and
Eagles have a chance to make the Playoffs but it is fun for to include hope for the other three teams.
