ATI: Defense, Haden & More Browns

Orange and Browns' Cleveland Browns Insider Lane Adkins and Fred Greetham answers reader questions in the latest installment of Ask The Insiders. Head to the Ask The Insiders forum to add your own questions for Lane and Fred to answer.

Browns 49:

Doesn't it make sense that incentive has a lot to do with performance? So, how many Browns players have incentive clauses in their contracts?  And aren't these contracts increasingly coming under Scheiner's control?

Lane:

Some, but incentives in this age generally are as off-season workouts -- others are easily obtainable, such as waking up and reporting.

flaktower2:

I better read that Haslam threw a freaking tv threw his mansion window!!!  After this BS loss!!!

When are we going to hear from an owner that should be PISSED?????   I've been a Yankees fan as long as a Browns fan and  "old man" Steinbrenner would've been on the phone screaming at his manager then firing him!!!!!  In this case Pettine!!!! His clock management is unbelievable, and his decisions are horrible.  Really 2pt attempt? Why???

Lane:

Knowing his track record and how invisible he has been to folks, I don't see anything official coming.

I will be checking in on a few people over the next couple days, hopefully we can gain a reaction.

---

enzy69:

Is there any players in our DL or At LB that you would consider good at playing the run?

Lane:

Let me leave it as this for the time being - I have never witnessed a team over an extended period of time having such issues in getting LBs to fill.

---

BringItStrong:

Twitter/cooler rumors "bad news on Haden" ? Fallout from not playing when active? Is the league penalizing Haden or the Browns? Or something else?

Lane:

I don't have any facts that I am comfortable with at this time, just speculation.

---

OkiBrown:

Perhaps, maybe, possibly....Farmer is responsible for the roster but Pett responsible for who dresses game day. Could there be a rift between Pett and Ray and Petts way of telling him off is deactivating Bowe on game day?

Lane:

I have heard the desire to have him active on game-day has not been a priority and not an issue internally.

---

Shrooney:

Shelton was in just over 25% of the snaps - was that part of the rotation plan or disappointment in his play?

Lane:

Part of the plan, as we noted last week leading up to the game was to see others in a different role to hopefully provide improved efficiency -- I was surprised his snap-count was down to 25% and will add, he did not play well on Sunday.

---

Tomfooleried:

Whose idea was all this position switching anyway? I know Pettine gives his coordinators latitude to coach and whatnot but he's got to be complicit in this clusterf--- decision, right?

Lane:

The DC makes the changes, but also comes with the blessing of the HC -- so there again is that double edged sword.

---

Browns49:

Manziel's time in Cleveland? Depends on the police report, doesn't it?

Fred:

Got the feeling today from Pettine that they are still in the process of what they are going to do, but my understanding is they already know what's in the report.

---

Grover71:

How much input did MP have on the current roster composition? Are/were they all on the same page with the selection of players?

Fred:

He's pretty involved in the process, otherwise don't think a fourth-round pick would've been cut.

---

NJBrownsfan:

If we had kicked the extra point we would have been 24-23 as time expired.  Did we overthink the decision?

Lane:

The formal chart states going for two was the correct call -- me personally, I was thinking 1, but can also see why they opted for 2.

Fred:

Denver would've went for 2 after they scored, but Pettine's explanation was that it would put them up two field goals and they felt they could hold the Broncos to field goals. With that being said, if they would've made it, I would've been all for it, but they didn't.

jimkanicki:

haden/money laundering? anything to this lane?

Barry:

Not Lane, but of course we've heard various rumors. It stuns me that someone would go to press with something like this, inferring criminal behavior based on a single anonymous source.

Lane:

It's out there and we haven't heard anything of substance to openly note that this is true.
