Costly mistakes doom Browns in loss to Rams

The Browns offense turned the ball over four times and the Rams turned the mistakes into 17 points in the 24-6 loss to the Rams

The Browns couldn’t get out of their own way .

Continually shooting themselves in the foot with turnovers and costly penalties, the Rams scored 17 points off of four Browns turnovers in leading the way to a 24-6 win in St. Louis. The Browns were held without a touchdown. The Browns also had 11 penalties for 98 yards.

Taylor Gabriel fumbled on the third play offensive play of the game after being stripped of the ball by Janoris Jenkins on a short screen and Rodney McCleod returned the fumble 20 yards for the score.

That play set the tone and just like that it was 7-0 with 11:59 left in the first quarter.

On the next possession, Josh McCown was sacked by Williams Hayes and Akeem Ayers recovered at the Browns 25 setting up a 39-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein with 7:33 to play in the first quarter and just like that it was 10-0.

After scoring a field goal to open the second half and cut the deficit to 10-6, the Browns had a golden opportunity to cut further into the lead, but once again couldn’t get out of the way of themselves.

The Rams missed a field goal and the Browns took over and moved the ball, but had four penalties on the drive, including three holding penalties. The most costly was on Joe Thomas after Travis Benjamin caught a 40-yard pass on third-and-9 to move the ball inside the Rams 20. Instead of at least cutting the deficit to 10-9, the Browns are forced to punt the ball back to the Rams.

The Rams took the punt and moved the length of the field for a touchdown. The score was aided greatly on a long pass interference penalty on Pierre Desir. On the next play, Desir was beaten deep by Kenny Britt for 41 yards to the Browns one. Todd Gurley scored on the next play to make it 17-6.

Still in the game with 13:17 to play and down 17-6, the Browns were driving when McCown hit Travis Benjamin across the middle in space, but Benjamin was hit by T.J. McDonald, who stripped him of the ball and Nick Fairley recovered at the Rams’ 44.

The Rams moved to the Browns’ 21 and on third-and-8, Nick Foles threw an incomplete pass over the head of the receiver. However, K’Waun Williams held the receiver and instead of keeping it a two possession game, Gurley scored from 16 yards out on the next play to make it 24-6.

To add insult to injury, McCown was strip sacked on the next drive and the Rams recovered for their fourth turnover. McCown went to the locker room and did not return.
