With the official kickoff to free agency signings officially set to begin with the NFL’s new year commencing at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, news has already been leaking out the destinations of several soon-to-be free agents.
Travis Benjamin--who was believed to be the closest Browns free agent to staying with the team--is set to sign with the San Diego Chargers according to NFL Network’s Rand Getlin. The Falcons and the Texans were also in pursuit of Benjamin.
The Browns were believed to have their eyes on Bengals wide receiver Marvin Jones, whom Hue Jackson coached in Cincinnati.
However, Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reports that Jones join the Lions. The deal is reported to be in the neighborhood of $8 million per year. With Calvin Johnson announcing his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, the Lions stepped up their efforts to replace him.
The Browns two offensive lineman set to become free agents, Alex Mack and Mitchell Schwartz are getting a lot of attention per various national reports including interest from the Falcons. Safety Tashaun Gipson is also set to hit the open market later this afternoon.
