Ask the Insiders: Answering Your Cleveland Browns Questions

Lane has been busy answering all of your questions in our Ask The Insiders Forum. A sampling of some of the recent answers here.

Primarily Lane, and some of the rest of us, try to be very responsive to your questions as subscribers. Here are some of the recent ones. You can click through our ATI Forum here to see all the answers.

I've found myself starting at the top and just clicking "Next Topic" for a good half hour to glean more information as often as I can.

A sampling over the last few days:

Q

"this is going to be disaster draft for the new front office if thety go way of old front offices and passs on any of the top three qbs just to trade down for more picks / theres is not one second tier quarter back , cook , kid from ohio state , kid from penn state /  non of these are that good i guess the new front  offices didnt pay attension or didnt read to past fronnt people it never works out/ plus griffin isnt that good anymore has been with health issues confidence problems mistake signing him its going to cost the browns"

Lane

Has the ORG made a selection yet?

Q

"There are some in the cooler that don't like Deforest Buckner. All I see is a Big, strong kid making plays. What is there not to like?"

Lane

He displayed a tendency to not play at max effort snap in and snap out, which isn't uncommon for a player, especially one of his size. I have not heard this being a specific or serious issue for teams.

At the next level the training, commitment and coaching help defer a player from such occasional activity

Q

"Trading picks is always subjective, although I think most now use the JJ sheet,  but do you know, or have an educated guess, as to what they are looking to acquire for the 2nd overall? And I know the lower the trader the more picks involved., but would they sacrifice a bit to stabilize the roster for this season?"

Lane

Word is they want PLENTY in return and they formulate from a different strategic program than the ole' JJ sheet

Q

Lane, you have mentioned in the past that the team is willing to accept young talent in exchange for picks. I'm assuming from your comments about Cox and Wilkerson that the team would rather take young talent over established players in the final year of their contract.

Using the Eagles as an example, would you say we're far more likely to see a trade like 8, a pick this year, A higher pick next year, and a guy like Agholor or Eric Rowe?

Lane

If Philly, the scenario fits more into what you note. The Browns seek talent, if the young talent they could possibly gain in trade is better than what they see as viable at a draft slot, that's the direction they'll look.

Q

In another thread, you stated that "neither [Wentz or Goff] looked as good as RG3 in his workout for the team." Does this statement kind of say it all in where the Browns are in their thinking regarding RG3 vs. the others? Do they view him as a better "prospect" than two QB's projected at the top of this draft?

Lane

It only shows where they are today. RG3 has issues to work through and this organization has a plan for him, this HC is going to utilize him more as he was in his rookie season to utilize his athleticism and gain a comfort level on the field -- regain confidence, etc.

What many miss is, RG3 was a pretty accurate QB, could make plays with his legs and was a dynamic. Following the knee injuries, he wasn't the same player, he wasn't fully healthy, lost confidence, didn't know how to protect himself, didn't want to jump back into the read-option due to injury and wasn't mentally prepared to become a pocket passer.

He is humbled and trusts Hue Jackson and Pep Hamilton and is showing well to date.

We'll see what happens

Q

Do we know if and when Goff and Wentz had private workout and how each went? I have not heard anything

Lane

Noted here previously, Browns thought those two did well, but neither looked as good as RG3 in his workout for the team

Q

Assuming that LA Rams(still feels weird) draft a QB, what are the pros and cons of staying put and drafting Tunsil and stashing him at RT and keeping Thomas at LT?  Will it hinder Tunsil's development to stick him at RT until JT is ready to move on?  My reasons behind this question; RGIII never had a great line in Washington, Tunsil and players already on roster would make Cleveland's line more solid than Dallas (speculation I know), it would enable a solid running game, and if RGIII goes down, it provides a Rookie (presumably selected in later rounds) more time in the pocket and does not ruin his development either...  Thoughts?

Lane

I am of the belief Tunsil is the type of talent that you can utilize on either side, but he has all the tools to be a very good LT for the next decade.

I am also of the belief that the Browns are considering such a move in the event the top of the round and trade scenarios don't play to their favor

Q

You touched upon this on Twitter but I was hoping for some clarification. Silver seems to be telling everyone and their momma that the Browns prefer Goff and that he believes the Rams are taking the Browns' QB at 1. My questions are the following:

  1. Would Hue really tell Silver how the Browns have the QB's rated?

  2. If Hue has told him, would Silver really make that public as he seems to be doing?

Lane

  1. I'd say he has a better idea than anyone outside of the Browns organization.

  2. With that I'd say, Silver has expressed his opinion, whether that comes with insight from Jackson, we do not know

Q

Is that Philly trade scenario being reported or was that from a question on the board?

Sorry, I can't seem to find the source.

Lane

There is a national report that the Eagles have offered a significant trade offer to the Browns

Q

They have the most picks in the draft and are not in the trade discussion with the Browns?

Lane

I'd say the 49ers have a good feeling where the Browns are with the #2 pick

Q

Has there been any interest in Vernon Hargreaves III?

Lane

Have heard very little on him and Cleveland

Q

Whether we miss the boat or not, we know Sashi can wait and is patient.
If waiting for the best offer will take time, I'm sure we'll be fine and not lose in negotiation chicken
Lastly Paul is involved in systems and culture design. How is he involved in scouting.

Lane

Never show your hand, your truest intentions

DePodesta is not involved in the actual scouting aspect

Q

Do you know if any players are involved?

Lane

I do not know

Q

Lane, Barry, Fred,

Why would you trade out of pick when you have yet to prove you can draft a starter let alone a player or a super **** ? The only results seen so far are we let some decent players walk.

Lane

The great debate could be, is a guy sitting at #2 the player they really want or do they see volume as being a better option at this time. Personally, if the guy, a QB is sitting there at #2 and they are in on him, then potentially solidify the position for once

Q

Lane so let's say the Rams pick Wentz. The Browns now have solid offers from teams that are enticing to trade up to 2. But Hugh really likes Goff too, he is not at the level of RG3 but he is young and yet to play in the league. Hugh thinks if he resurrects RG3 and Goff develops into a FQB then this team can win without taking the trade offer now in the coming years and trade one QB away once developed/resurrected in future for higher picks. He has a much better chance of solving the QB dilemma.

FO wants the extra picks now but Hugh wants Goff. Does Sashi take Goff as per Hugh's wish in your opinion based on what you are hearing?

Lane

If Jackson absolutely wants -- a must have -- one of the QBs, that is the direction
