Browns TE Gary Barnidge had surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia

Cleveland Browns Pro Bowl TE Gary Barnidge had surgery to repair a sports hernia on Thursday, Hue Jackson told reporters.

CLEVELAND, OHIO-- Gary Barnidge was missing from Cleveland's final OTA practice on Wednesday in Berea, but Hue Jackson said simply that the tight end was excused.

Now, the reason for which he was excused is clear.

Barnidge underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia on Thursday morning, Jackson told reporters at the team's golf outing.

Jackson indicated as well that Barnidge will miss the team's mini camp next week, but will be ready for Training Camp.

Barnidge, 30, had a breakout season for the Browns in 2015, amassing 1,043 yards receiving and nine touchdown catches to earn his first trip to the Pro Bowl.

Browns CB Joe Haden also had surgery this offseason to repair an injured ankle. Haden hasn't participated in OTAs, but he has been around the team and is working to return to the team for Training Camp.
