More Tidbit Tremors

It's well-known that we have a weakness for letting fans in on stuff they aren't really supposed to know yet. Lane, in particular, has this condition and, try as we might, we just can't cure him. So, sorry folks, here are some more tremors in the Force* that Lane has sensed...

* "The Force" is a registered trademark of Lucasfilms, Inc. Here are the latest tidbit tremors that we hear are surrounding the 2003 Cleveland Browns. A little this and a little that....

• The recent demotion of linebacker Barry Gardner - or should we say the recent promotion of second-year linebacker Andra Davis - should have come as no surprise to visitors of BerniesInsiders.com. Just last week a member of the organization informed this column that the change was in the making..........
• More Gardner talk...... When the free agent linebacker signed with the Browns this off-season, he was brought to town to add veteran depth at the linebacker positions. While no promises were made when Gardner inked his deal, we do know that he was told that he would have the opportunity to compete for the open starting spots. Thus, Gardner is now in the running to become the Browns starting strong-side linebacker, or is he? Ben Taylor, another of the Browns second-year linebackers got off to a quick start in training camp, but his play has leveled off..........
• Surprising news came out of Berea early this week that second-year wide receiver Andre Davis had suffered a sprained knee. Needless to say, the team would not openly discuss or state the nature of the injury to Davis. Again, if you are a regular site visitor of BerniesInsiders.com you would have known a week ago what the injury was and the status of Davis would be..........
• More Davis talk……….The second-year receiver will not discuss his injury situation, but indications we are hearing from those close to the team are that Davis is about 75% healthy or recovered from the knee injury and may be close to 100% by the opening game of the season……….
• It seems like a year ago, but it was only a few months back when we first talked up the contract situation that wide receiver Dennis Northcutt was about to enter into with the Browns. Well, the contract issue is playing out as we discussed... The Browns have offered Northcutt options that basically are under market value for a player that produced in the receiving, rushing, and return game as Northcutt did in the 2002 season. If Northcutt stays healthy and the Browns utilize Northcutt as they did in the 2002 season, he will not be on the Browns roster next season, opting for free agency appears to be close to a lock……….
• Some within the Browns organization expected fallout from the quarterback competition which was won by Kelly Holcomb. While the players have kept the majority of their thoughts to themselves, it is known in the Browns locker-room that the player's choice will lineup under center for the team to start the 2003 season. No disrespect to Tim Couch, but in the eyes of many players of influence on the roster, Kelly Holcomb has proven in the huddle and in practice sessions that he deserves the opportunity……….
