Christian Kirksey "excited" with big bonus

According to the NFL, Christian Kirksey received the seventh-highest veteran player bonus for his production in 2016

CLEVELAND--Browns linebacker Christian Kirksey continues to get rewarded for his breakout season in 2016.

According to the NFL, Kirksey will received the seventh-highest player bonus from the veteran performance-based compensation pool, which compensates players based on their playing time and salary levels. According to the report, the bonus amounts to $84,154.17.

Kirksey, 24, became a full-time starter for the Browns last season. He started all 16 games and finished with 148 tackles, including three passes broken up and 2.5 sacks. He was third in the NFL in tackles.

"Didn't know it was the 7th highest, but I figured it would be up there seeing how many snaps I played in the year," Kirksey said via text. "I was excited. Whenever you're in the top of anything you get a kick out of that."

Kirksey is entering the final season of his rookie contract and is set to make just under $1.8 million in 2017. The Browns just signed Joel Bitonio to a $51 million contract extension last week. Bitonio was drafted in the same year as Kirksey in the second-round, while Kirksey was drafted in the third-round.

It is believed the Browns are trying to sign Kirksey to an extension, as well.
