Report: Cleveland Browns sign DB Jason McCourty

The Browns added a veteran DB today, according to reports, with Jason McCourty coming on board.

With rookie minicamp over, and Howard Wilson getting hurt, the Cleveland Browns look like they have brought in some help in the defensive backfield with Jason McCourty:

McCourty was with the Titans since being drafted by them in the 2009 NFL Draft in the 6th Round. His stellar play early in his career earned him a 6 year, $43 million contract in 2012 but as his play declined the Titans decided to move on from the 9-year vet.

In his best season, McCourty had 4 interceptions but has been a constant tackler and solid man or zone corner.

With his age, McCourty's speed has taken a hit which makes him best suited as a zone corner, one of many schemes Browns DC Gregg Williams runs.

McCourty joins veterans Joe Haden and Jamar Taylor and youngsters Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Marcus Burley, as well as a number of UDFAs trying to make the roster, in one of the Browns weakest areas of the depth chart, cornerback.

The Browns have yet to confirm the signing, nor do we have any contract details. That McCourty was still available at this point lowers his asking price.

As an older veteran, McCourty can help solidify the cornerback spot if his play warrants but his contract is unlikely to guarantee a roster spot in the end.

Update: Based on reports, McCourty's contract is small and fitting of the timing of the signing. 2 years, $6 million is the report but how that is structured could mean he gets far less in Year 1 and only the guaranteed numbers will matter for certain:

Fallon did add the guaranteed number which tells us that this is essentially a 1-year deal with a chance of him doing well and getting that 2nd year:

While Rapoport noted McCourty as a big time addition, Browns fans should temper their enthusiasm given his age and availability. Still, McCourty should still be able to help in an area of much-needed reinforcements.
