Browns announce McCourty, Gonzalez signings

The Browns announced the signings of defensive back Jason McCourty and seventh-round draft choice Zane Gonzalez

BEREA, Ohio--The Browns addressed a need with a veteran and signed a draft choice, as well.

The Browns announced that they have signed defensive back Jason McCourty. To make room on the roster, the team waived DB Donte Carey, who was just signed earlier this week after being invited as an undrafted rookie to the team's rookie minicamp.

“We’re glad to add Jason to our defensive back field,” said Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown in a statement. “He’s a talented player who has had a lot of success in this league. He’s a good fit for our team and we feel his experience and versatility will be an asset for our defense.”

McCourty, who was coached by Browns defensive coordinator Gregg Williams in Tennessee said he's excited to join the Browns. He reportedly received a two-year contract for $6 million, including $2 million guaranteed.

“After taking my visit it became clear what is brewing within this organization in Cleveland,” said McCourty. “For me, that made it an easy decision. Obviously, I had a year of experience with Gregg Williams so I know how crazy he is and how much energy he brings to the table. I know what his defenses consist of. In talking with Sashi (Brown) and coach Hue Jackson, it was obvious. The energy flowed through the entire building with everybody I talked to all the way to the players. I want to be a part of something where I felt like I am wanted and where I feel like I’m part of a family. This was an easy decision for me.”

Entering his ninth NFL season, McCourty (5-11, 195) has played in 108 games with 90 starts for the Tennessee Titans. He was originally selected by the Titans in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft and amassed 517 tackles, 13 interceptions, 91 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and one sack. After being named the team’s starting corner in 2011, McCourty has led Tennessee during the past six seasons with 11 interceptions and 78 passes defensed, based on coaches’ film.

Last season, McCourty started 14 games, posting a team-best 18 passes defensed and finishing first among Titans defensive backs with 64 tackles. He tied for second on the team with two interceptions, while adding one fumble recovery and two special-teams tackles.

McCourty was honored as Tennessee’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2014 for his performance on the field and his dedication to the community.

The Browns also announced they have signed seventh-round draft choice Zane Gonzalez. The Browns have now signed four of their 10 2017 draft picks, including DB Howard Wilson (fourth round), OL Rod Johnson (fifth round) and RB Matthew Dayes (seventh round). Gonzalez was the 224th overall pick.  Gonzalez won the 2016 Lou Groza Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top kicker. He finished his career as the FBS all-time leader in field goals made (96) and points by a kicker (494).
