Browns Work Out Three More Linemen

The Browns continue to look at offensive linemen, trying out three more veteran guards this past Tuesday.

League sources have told that three additional offensive linemen were worked by the team during this past week. The three linemen are Notre Dame offensive guard Jim Jones, third-year guard/center Bill Ferrario, and veteran offensive guard Calvin Collins.

The youngest of the three is offensive guard Jim Jones, who was with the Ravens last year. Jones was allocated by Brian Billick's club to the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe during the off-season. His tenure with the Ravens came to a quick end in 2003, however, as he injured his medial collateral ligament in a pre-season game against the New York Giants. Jones was among the last cuts by the Ravens at the end of training camp after reaching an injury settlement with the club. Prior to that, Jones had been on-and-off the Ravens practice squad at various points in 2002.

Bill Ferrario is a three year veteran who was let go earlier this year by the Packers. The guard / center from Wisconsin had played himself up to the second-string in Green Bay after coming aboard as a fourth-round draft choice in 2001. Ferrario was going to be sent to NFL Europe this season to work on his snapping skills, as he took the vast majority of snaps at the guard position and the Packers wanted him to be more versatile. Ferrario turned down the assignment, however, as he was concerned about traveling overseas as the United States entered into the conflict in Iraq. The Packers viewed Ferrario as being more suited at center, and included him in the last set of cuts as they got down to the 53-man roster. The Pack cut long-term vet Frank Winters at the same time.

Calvin Collins played in 15 games as a rookie at Atlanta, starting 13 games at center and earning All-Rookie honors out of Texas A&M. He went on to start 16 games for the Falcons in 1998 at left guard as well as starting in Super Bowl XXXIII. Collins played in  8 games in 1999, then 8 at center and 8 at left guard in 2000. He was waived during summer camp of 2001 and moved on to Minnesota, where he started 3 games that year. After signing up with Houston for 2002, he injured his hamstring during summer camp and was subsequently cut. Collins then went to Pittsburgh, where he tried out during their 2003 training camp, and was cut late in August.

Besides playing at center and guard, Calvin has also worked at long snapper
