Defensive line is hurting

Take a deep breath when you watch the Browns' defensive line against Baltimore next Sunday.

End Courtney Brown has been working out, but it's doubtful that he'll play, and end Keith McKenzie missed practice for a second straight day with an abdominal injury. Following practice on Thursday, coach Butch Davis said that McKenzie will probably dress but not start.

At this time, it looks like the starting ends will be Greg Spires and Tyrone Rogers. Orpheus Roye, who had been starting at left end, has been moved inside to bolster the tackle rotation, but he could move back to an end if needed.

"It's going to hurt our depth, but it's going to put a premium on someone else to play well," Davis said

McKenzie is listed as questionable on the injury report. When a player misses practices on Wednesday and Thursday, he normally doesn't play the following Sunday.

EXCEDRIN TIME: Offensive guard Ross Verba didn't practice on Thursday. Verba was kicked in the head on Wednesday and wasn't up to going through full drills.

"He had a headache, but he'll practice Friday," Davis said. "He's going to be okay. It was more out of precaution. We didn't want to run the risk of him getting dinged again."

INJURY UPDATE: Ravens offensive guard Edwin Mulitalo (knee), who was listed as questionable on Wednesday, won't play. Fullback Sam Gash (leg) and quarterback Elvis Grbac (neck) were removed from the injury list. They had been listed as probable.
