Courtney Brown Wins 2003 Gameball Race

Call it the Revenge of the First Draft Picks. Two oft-criticized players, Courtney Brown and Tim Couch, first selections in the 2000 and 1999 drafts, finished a close first and second in the 2003 Gameballs and Goats voting. Here are the top (and bottom) contributors in 2003, according to BerniesInsiders.com visitors, as well as a listing of the top individual performances.

Each week following both pre-season and regular season games, BerniesInsiders.com visitors are given an opportunity to award three goathorns and three gameballs to Browns players, coaches, or team units. The results are reported each week, along with fan comments and write-in votes. All the weekly editions can be found on the 2003 schedule page.

DE Courtney Brown held off QB Tim Couch to finish with the most Gameballs awarded during the 2003 season, making Brown the team's MVP based on a vote of Browns fans. The four-year veteran built a commanding lead prior to being sidelined with an injury, and a late charge by Couch during the last several games of the season was not enough to topple Brown.

Couch did, however, receive the highest individual vote total for a single game, with 202 gameballs awarded for his Sunday night performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Kelly Holcomb received the most goathorns in a single game, being "awarded" 154 for his performance against the St. Louis Rams.

Last year's winner was wide receiver Dennis Northcutt, who played a key role in several victories during the 2002 season.

Also of note is the sixth-place finish of WR Kevin Johnson, who was cut during the season after displaying a lack of enthusiasm for a backup role with the team.

The most goathorns were awarded to offensive coordinator Bruce Arians, who received 740. Butch Davis finished with the second-worst ranking, winding up with 380 goathorns.

Only the top vote getters each week are included in the year-end compilation. Over 10,000 gameballs and goathorns were handed out Browns players, coaches, and team units during the 2003 season.
