Injuries are mounting

Injuries to Corey Fuller, Wali Rainer and Keith McKenzie put a dent into the defense.

The injury situation on defense for the Browns could be a problem when they host the Pittssburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Cornerback Corey Fuller had his injured right ankle in a walking boot on Wednesday. Middle linebacker Wali Rainer had a brace on his injured right ankle.

Neither player participated in practice on Wednesday. Coach Butch Davis said that they won't play if they don't practice on Thursday.

The rest of the defense is downplaying the injuries. They are comforted by the strong return of Courtney Brown last Sunday.

"It always concerns you when you have starting, core guys go down," strong safety Earl Little said. "This is the time of the year when things like that happen. Keith went down, but we have Courtney (Brown) back.

"We still don't have our whole unit, but that's what the NFL is all about – having guys step up. It's not too much of a concern because I know we have confidence in the other guys. We just have to go out there and continue to work hard."

ARRIVE EARLY: Lew Merletti, director of security for the Browns, is asking fans to arrive before noon. Tighter security measures ordered by the NFL means that fans wearing jackets will have to remove them for a visual check.

ROSTER MOVES: The Browns waived defensive end Cedric Killings and safety Dyshod Carter on Wednesday. Defensive tackle DeVone Claybrooks and defensive back Earthwind Moreland were promoted from the practice roster to the active roster. One of the two openings on the practice squad was filled by defensive end Felipe Claybrooks, who had been with Arizona. The Claybrooks are cousins.

INJURY REPORT: Questionable for the Steelers are offensive tackle Wayne Gandy (hamstring), cornerback Jason Simmons (hamstring) and running back Amos Zereoue (shoulder). Listed as probable are running back Jerome Bettis (wrist), receiver Plaxico Burress (shoulder), linebacker John Fiala (groin) and cornerback Hank Poteat (probable).
