Barry: Hey, I've got a question to kick things off. Carlos, as you were digging into the story, did you get a sense of any team that would be our biggest competition for signing Everage?
Big C: Actually, yes I did. I got the impression that the 49ers and Raiders were both very interested in Everage as well. If you take a look at both teams' depth charts at the safety position they each could use some reinforcement in this area.
Swede: I´m surprised that he´s still out there, considering that he was a really good college-player. Is it the shoulder injury that´s making teams weary of him, or is it more of an attitude/ "off the field troubles " thingy ?
Big C: Could be a little of both. As you know, Everage sustained the rotator cuff injury during the fifth game of the season and continued to play. Everage also took part in the Senior Bowl this year so there's something to be said for his toughness and passion for the game. However, Everage did have an off-the-field cloud over his head while at Oklahoma but has since overcome this problem. I don't think there's anything about this guy's character that would be a deal breaker.
Air Al: Yeah, why is he still available, and why didn't the Browns show interest before the injury to Jones? They picked up Kentrell Curry using similar logic. Why no look at Everage until now? Also, why wait until July 12 to get him in for a look? I say, beat the others to the punch and throw him some jack and get him in here.
Big C: Kentrell Curry, I believe, was a very good pickup for the Browns. Before his injury he was ranked among the top ten safeties entering this years draft. Kentrell was sidelined for the 2003 season with a stress fracture but had been cleared healthy when the Browns signed him to a free agent contract. Everage on the other hand has not been fully cleared by doctors and that's what's kept teams from showing serious interest up to this point. Maybe if he wouldn't have taken the "show-me-the-money" type approach and had the surgery he would be on someone's roster as we speak.
Brando413: Hey Big C.......Thanks for the info!! According to your article, Everage has been working out with Jerry Rice. Do you think that this may give the Raiders a leg up on everyone else?
Big C: Indeed, I do! Everage will be working out with Rice until he is cleared by doctors July 4.
Mikehey: what are the chances of him signing with the browns?
Big C: That my friend is a question I can't answer but I think he does have a good chance of signing with the Browns if he proves to be healthy once he's cleared by doctors. We're talking about high caliber talent here and it would definitely be in the Browns best interest to add such a player to their roster. The only thing that I can see the Browns possibly staying away from him for is if they have some concerns about his PAST off-the-field problems. The Browns could be leary about character issues after dealing with the William Green situation.
