The Browns reduced their roster to 79 Monday by waiving three players and placing eight others on reserve lists. Among those to go on IR was linebacker Brant Boyer. Also placed on IR were offensive lineman Chad Beasley, fullback Ben Miller and defensive back Michael Grant.
Boyer broke a bone in his foot during a practice against the Buffalo Bills Aug. 6. He had surgery the same day and was told that his rehabilitation would be an eight-to-10 week period.
"Unfortunately, none of our medical people have that crystal ball to see how long it will take," Davis said. "The best guess was that he would return for the bye week. Given some of the injuries we suffered last week, it would be difficult to go the first five to eight weeks of the season shorthanded."
Linebacker Josh Buhl, punter Ryan Dutton and quarterback Nate Hybl were waived. Placed on the physically-unable-to-perform list were defensive lineman Antonio Garay, tight end Keith Heinrich and safety Sean Jones. Running back Adimchinobe Echemandu was placed on the reserve-non-football injury list.
Beasley and Miller both suffered injuries last Saturday against Kansas City. Beasley has a sprained ankle with a non-displaced fracture. Miller has a sprained ankle with a fracture and is scheduled to have surgery today.
Grant has a partial tear of the patellar tendon.
Defensive tackle Alvin McKinley was diagnosed last Thursday with Type 1 diabetes. McKinley didn't make the trip to Kansas City.
Cornerback Michael Lehan is out of his cast and close to returning to practice. Lehan has suffered two mid-foot sprains to his left foot. Lehan remains hopeful of playing in the season opener Sept. 12.
Listed as day-to-day on the injury report are linebacker Chaun Thompson (wrist), offensive linemen Melvin Fowler (ankle) and Joaquin Gonzalez (ankle); linebacker Eric Westmoreland (head) and defensive end Corey Jackson (ankle). Offensive tackle Kirk Chambers (hyperextended knee) and linebacker Mason Unck (hamstring) are listed as limited.
Tight end Steve Heiden will miss two to four weeks with a knee injury.
Thompson participated in all drills during Monday's practice. Davis expects Thompson to play against the Bears.
