A Clean Snip

BerniesInsiders.com's singular source of complaint looks once more on a happy planet and finds something to complain about. This time, he's trudging back and forth from a distant parking garage and pondering some advice for Browns owner Randy Lerner. It doesn't take much to set our SSoC off, and this time it just took the word "Chiaverini". Don't say that word in his presence...

As you leave the Cleveland Browns press box, there are two elevators you can take.

To the right is an elevator which leads down to the gigantic below-ground structure underneath the Stadium. The cavernous concrete structure at the other end of the elevator ride allows reporters to head to the field, to locker rooms, and to the little media rooms that the Browns have set up for themselves and the visiting team.

The elevator on the left goes down to the stadium ground level. Where the fans are.

On Friday night, following the Browns almost-pointless fourth exhibition game, I went left.

It was a fateful decision which turned me from my mild-mannered alter ego into a Singular Source of Complaint *.

Logistical Nightmares R' Us

How I came to take the elevator down to the fans, rather than the elevator down to the players, was the result of bad parking.

I've been a season ticket holder since the Browns return in 1999, and this year marks the first that I've been Bernie's Insiders' representative in the press box. Being in the press box helps me do a lot of good things for the site and the magazine. You get a terrific stream of information, provided by of the team and the NFL, and being able to talk to players afterwards provides insight into the game that lets us do a better job for our readers.

Tragically, it lowers my gameday beer consumption to zero and results in a high level of sartorial discomfort.

To help take advantage of the improved access, I take with me a cell phone, a keyboard, digital voice recorder, notepads, pencils - all the accoutrements of my very extreme dorkdom. They are stuffed into a laptop case in order to make them easier to carry.

The whole ensemble, when added to standard press box wear and my normal appearance, creates the composite picture of a complete twit. I am the personification of the term "nerd".

You wouldn't look at me heading to the game and say "there goes a hard-core football guy". You would look at me heading to the game and say "I bet he's going to audit something."

Realizing that my dork pack and neutral clothing might make me a target for derision or high-velocity rocks, I take pains to limit the amount of time that I'm wandering around exposed as a nerd. The principle is similar to the danger hermit crabs face when leaving one shell and going to another.

To limit my window of vulnerability, I try to park as close to the Stadium as I can.

Tragically, this last Friday, the parking garage where I normally park had its gates closed. As anyone parking on game day knows, this is not a small matter. Once the primary parking target is unavailable, one has to improvise and look to secondary targets, a risky process which can lead to unpredictable results.

In my case, this resulted in having to get back onto route Route 2 and eventually head up East Ninth street in the mass of traffic, going further and further from the Stadium in search of parking. Each additional start and stop up East Ninth lengthened my exposure, eventually forcing me to park a healthy distance from the Stadium.

Ultimately, I would be walking a considerable distance to reach the Stadium. My attempt to salvage what little dignity I possess was smashed asunder.

I was thwarted by parking. I was in a state of thwart.

Since I'm very stable emotionally, I greeted this situation with a terrific stream of cursing, which eventually degraded into one rather unacceptable, if cathartic, word, which when properly motivated I am able to voice with an admittedly disconcerting machine-gun-like delivery.

I found a place. I parked.

Then it happened.

As I exited the parking structure, I noticed the sign which would eventually prompt my exit through the left elevator: "Garage Closes An Hour After the End of the Game".

It was printed in red ink. Red means "serious". My neatly-structured world was in a state of chaos.

The Long Dark Walk

After the numbing shock of the sign had worn off, I was tense. My mind invented nightmarish scenarios of being stranded in downtown Cleveland sans car and sans desire to spend mega-bucks on a cab ride home. I imagined pounding fruitlessly on the closed door of the garage, yelling my futile distress into the dark, empty night.

Under normal post-game circumstances, I would head down to the locker room, but I knew that our coverage was in good hands with Mike McLain and Joe Vardon, who was filling in for Dave.

That garage sign was easily enough to put a spring in my step.

I realized I was, yes, very much on the clock. I was in my 60-minute drill and didn't have time to huddle. Time was of the essence. I knew that I needed to take that elevator on the left, down to the Cleveland Clinic gate and then into downtown Cleveland.

It was a nice, long walk back to where I parked as the clock neared midnight.

I trudged back towards downtown amidst a mass of Browns fans.

These fans were folks who had come to a pointless exhibition game and stayed until the end, sitting in a near-empty stadium. Fans who cheered for guys like Luke McCown and Richard Alston, who are rarely mentioned in the press, and don't make the cover of the media guide.

In other words, these were my kind of people. I was back in my native element.

Still, I couldn't help but notice that the names on the backs of the jerseys worn by these fans were unusual. Not many had players active on the Browns roster.

I saw "Chiaverini". I saw "Spielman". I saw "57 Rudd". I saw "85 Johnson". Player after player who has and come and gone through Cleveland since the team returned in 1999. These jerseys would have looked at home with my prized "95 Miller" jersey, given to me by a friend back in 1999.

Here were all these fans, wearing the names of players long gone from the new Browns.

All these players whose presence on the team somehow prompted fans to purchase a jersey bearing their name, in hopes that their support would be rewarded through exciting plays on the gridiron. Largely, those hopes had been in vain.

The longer I walked, the more irritated I got. The more obsolete jerseys I saw, the more I became convinced: It has to be now.

Our PSL dollars, $7 beers, and season-ticket mega-bucks haven't resulted in the glory we wanted.

We wanted the old Browns back. We wanted the tradition, the meaning, the spirit back. The Browns mean "powerhouse", they mean "dynasty".

That's what this team was when it established in the 1940s, and their strength ran through the mid-60s until the Modell Era yielded year after year of mediocrity balanced by the occasional near-return to grandeur.

On and off the field, Browns fans have had to deal with a series of frustrating episodes: Dwight Clark's public chase of Brian Billick, only to see the rapidly-balding head coach wind up with the Ratbirds. A single play-off game in 2002, remembered best for having the Browns dramatically implode against the noxious Steelers. Jamal Lewis' 295 yards in 2003. A 43-0 blow-out to kick off the team's return in 1999. Chris Palmer being forced to play Kevin Johnson at quarterback. Blown draft choice after blown draft choice.

We've had our fill of embarrassment and denial. These fans deserve better.

A Nice Clean Snip

Butch Davis brought hope, as well as obvious self-confidence, with him from the South. He was the savior with different accent and a track record of success.

The Browns head coach led the team back from the brink in 2001, instilling more confidence in the team and benefiting somewhat from the groundwork laid down by Chris Palmer. The team improved further in 2002, squeaking into the playoffs as a wild card when they edged a Falcons team which learned they were playoff-bound at halftime.

I have been an advocate of giving Davis a mulligan after the 2003 campaign. He was hurt by loss of leadership on the defensive side and a sickening spate of injuries along the offensive line. He made matters worse with his self-generated quarterback controversy, but after his success of the first two years, he deserved the benefit of the doubt. In my opinion, he still does.

But as I trudged back to my car, looking at all those jerseys of players long gone, the one thing I realized is that the last thing this town needs is a year of debate about our Head Coach.

Butch Davis' detractors are a growing group among Browns fans after the team's step back in 2003.

Mediocrity is the last thing this town needs. Another "small step forward" won't do it. A fan base split between pro-Davis and anti-Davis factions would be as miserable as the endless debates about quarterback position we all suffered through last year.

What I fear the most is another season where answers aren't clear.

Another season where fans angrily debate the fate of, this time, the head coach. Even a horrible season, clearly indicating that a fresh start is needed, might be better.

Don't subject us to that. We've had enough. These fans, their dashed expansion era hopes as plain as the names on their backs, have had enough.

If I were Randy Lerner, my expectations for my head coach would be the play-offs, or at least play-off contention into the last two weeks of the season. Nothing less will do.

Four years is enough, especially as Davis' tenure was preceded by two years of team development.

Since my bank account clearly indicates that I'm not Randy Lerner, all I have is advice: In the event that the team doesn't turn it around and march back into playoff contention, drop the axe on your head coach and move on quickly. No bogus "vote of confidence". No cryptic statements to the press, no waffling.

Don't let this town remember another football season as a time where fans angrily split apart and sports radio blares the same subject over and over ad nauseum.

I hope that Butch Davis succeeds and this year sees the Browns bounce right back from their step back in 2003. I think that there is a good chance that the Browns do, in fact, return to making progress after last year's re-trenching.

If that doesn't happen, though, Randy, you know what you have to do. Make it clean, and make it quick. Your team's fans don't need any more pain.
