Prospect Watch: Weekday TV Games

Greg Mastin looks at the prospects you can see on TV this week

More action from the MAC as the Toledo Rockets take on Northern Illinois in a very important league game. As mentioned last week, Toledo has a solid quarterback prospect in Bruce Gradkowski, a junior who will probably remain in school but could go on the first day if he comes out. He should be helped by the success of Ben Roethlisberger, who has put a damper on the idea that kids from lesser conferences are somehow less ready to play in the NFL. Offensive tackle Nick Kaczur is a another first day talent along with tight end Andrew Clarke.

Northern Illinois doesn't have any bigger name prospects such as Michael Turner a year ago, but are doing just fine without them. A couple of guys to watch are offensive tackle Jake Verstraete who might be someone you can develop into a solid right tackle or bigger offensive guard, and linebacker Brian Atkinson, who is a bit undersized, but makes plays and could get drafted in the later rounds.

It only seems like Louisville plays every game on weekdays. This will be their fourth game to appear on prime time during the week, but the last one this year. They face a Texas Christian team that has had its ups and downs, and has had some very bad defensive efforts, giving up 45, 70, 45 and 41 points in four games this year.

I think I've covered everyone Louisville has to offer already. They are led by quarterback Stephen LeFors who has improved his stock into the middle rounds. He has a couple of weapons in underclassman running back Eric Shelton, a potential high pick when he becomes draft eligible, and wide receiver J.R. Russell who is one of those receivers who could go in the third or fourth round and be a pleasant surprise.
