The loss came despite an inspired performance by the Browns defense in the first three quarters of play, which included six sacks of Jets quarterback Quincy Carter. With about half of the final quarter remaining, the Jets found their rushing attack once more and were able to 75 yards in about six minutes. The drive was capped off by an 11-yard Quincy Carter to Justin McCareins touchdown pass, which made the final score 10-7.
The team's matched each other with offensive ineffectiveness most of the game. Both the Jets and Browns offenses were able to barely muster over 200 total yards (Jets 235, Browns 216) and neither were effective in third-down situations. The third-down futility was almost identical for both teams, with the Browns converting 2-of-13 third-down situations, compared to 2-of-14 third down conversions for the Jets.
The Browns offensive woes were made worse beginning late in the second quarter, as quarterback Jeff Garcia left the game due to a shoulder injury. Garcia returned to the sidelines and threw the ball, but did not re-enter the game after being replaced by Kelly Holcomb. Perhaps more ominous for the coming weeks, starting right tackle Ryan Tucker was lost due to what appeared to be a knee injury in the second half. He was replaced by Joaquin Gonzalez, with Paul Zukauskas taking over the right guard position.
