WEB BUZZ: STEVE MCKINNEY

The Browns couldn't get a shot at Tarik Glenn, but they can get his buddy on the Colts offensive line. Steve McKinney is probably the best guard out there now, and the Browns are interested.

=== DOSSIER: OG STEVE MCKINNEY  ===

STATUS: THE BEST AVAILABLE GUARD. AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT.

RUMOR TRACKER:

3/5/2002: Like a lot of Browns fans, I was hoping that this one would last a lot longer. Unfortunately, McKinney never got out of Texas unsigned, as the expansion team signed McKinney to a lucrative 5-year, $16 million deal. This is already making Mike Wahle a more popular fellow, as a soon-to-actually-be-written web buzz will undoubtedly explain. McKinney was the best guard available, and now he's gone. Never underestimate the appeal of playing at home... which worked to the Browns disadvantage with McKinney and may be a disadvantage wtih Garrison Hearst as well.

3/4/2002: I don't think that anyone is surprised that the Browns are talking to McKinney. He's arguably the best OG available, and the Browns need line help in the worst way. Pat McManamon wasn't surprised, either, when he reported that McKinney will be coming to Berea for a visit. The Indianapolis papers aren't surprised as well, and are predicting that McKinney will be playing for someone other than the Colts next year. The Houston Texans think it might be them, as they've got McKinney scheduled for a visit. The Packers and the Falcons are sniffing around as well. All this adds up to a nice raise for McKinney, who will have large amounts of cash to console himself for having to move from Indy. If the Browns want him, they're going to have to pay. (AB)
