NERD NOTE: When I do these newswire recaps, the first thing I do is open up all the links in my copy of Firefox. I can do this because Firefox has a capability called "Live Bookmarks" and because we have a Newswire RSS feed for subscribers. If you're a subscriber and a Firefox user, you can set this up as well. It kicks butt, I'm tellin' ya, if you like drilling through the wire.
I'm probably biased because he's a good guy and he does the radio show with us, but Jeff Schudel has the best line of the day today: "Watching Ravens coach Brian Billick on the sideline and react to another bad throw by Kyle Boller is like watching someone eating a bad burrito."
He's right. Brian Billick is incredibly demonstrative when watching lesser mortals make mistakes while playing the game. On the other hand, Romeo Crennel doesn't seem to get fired up on the sidelines much at all. I'm not saying that in a negative way... he just seems to be able to roll with the punches without getting too emotional. Maybe that comes with all the decades of football he's coached.
Prior to the beginning of the season I was asked on our radio show if I was worried about Crennel's health. After all, he's in his late fifties, is a big guy, and is in one of the most stressful occupations known to man. I said that I really wasn't because he just didn't seem like the type of guy who has trouble managing the stress. So far this season, he seems to be living up to that. My skull would have exploded after week five.
Of course, the news that's everywhere is that the Browns have signed LB Andra Davis to a new five-year contract extension. Here's an article by Pat McManamon that's pretty representative. There isn't a lot of variation on the articles regarding Davis because the Browns didn't send out the press release until late in the day. Expect to hear more later today and tomorrow morning when the beat writers are able to talk to Crennel and Davis about it.
In the midst of a series of notes from the Plain Dealer, Reuben Droughns quoted as saying that the Raiders seem to get "a lot of drunk people" at the games. None of those drunk people are likely to vote to put Browns in the Pro Bowl, as the team's 4-9 record doesn't get players a lot of notice.
Outside the Newswire
- It doesn't look like Butch Davis will be heading to the Rockies anytime
soon. Boise State coach Dan Hawkins has
accepted the task of cleaning up after Gary Barnett's mess at the
University of Colorado.
- Over on ESPN, John Clayton says that the Browns-Raiders game are in the
half of NFL games
he considers to be interesting. Clayton ceased to be in the half of
columnists I considered interesting about two years ago, but at least it's
nice for one of the national guys to consider the game to be of note.
Clayton mostly pokes at Norv Turner.
- Our pal Jason from
Huddlegeeks dropped a tip into
about Leigh Bodden receiving the first YES checkmark in Chad Johnson's
magical list of defensive backs.
- Not Browns-related, but there's an interesting article in the Buffalo
News about the Denver Broncos
zone blocking scheme, which is the rare instance of a successful
approach which hasn't been copied throughout the league.
- Carl Steward, who has black hair and a red moustache, totally rips on the Raiders, saying that "It's only Thursday, and I already can hear you booing". This probably means the Raiders are going to play well Sunday. Anyhow, he tears 'em a new one this morning.
Latest from OBRLand
Another busy day as the Browns get ready for the Raiders. Later today, expect to see "Gameballs and Goats", our daily practice report from Berea, and several other articles on Browns-related subjects. Here's what showed up on Bernie's Insiders (soon to be the Orange and Brown Report) yesterday:
- Owl: From Nemesis to
Teammate? - The Owl
- Andra Davis Gets
Contract Extension - Browns Press Release
- TEs Limited in Thursday
Practice - Bernie's Insiders Staff Report
- Les: Browns Should Have
Stopped '72 Dolphins - Les Levine
- OBR Daily News and World
Report: 12/15 - Art Bietz
- Blogs: LJ here to stay (Ace Davis), Art Imitates Life (Ace Davis)
From the Forums
started a thread for discussing SI's recent article about the "Top
Ten NFL Rivalries", which listed both the Browns-Bengals and
Browns-Steelers are being among the leagues top rivalries.
- CaryNCBrownsBacker posted a link to
from Bang Cartoons, which is generally worth a chuckle. This is a flash
animation and plays through your speakers, so be careful if you're at work.
Here's CaryNC's thread, if you want to comment on it.
The OBR Daily News and World Report is a daily compendium of links, updates, and snarky chatter brought to you by the people who brought you Bernie's Insiders, BrownsTNG, the Ravens Suckzone, Greedwatch, and an entire series of other things they won't really admit to unless you catch them after a couple of beers.
EDITORS NOTE: Bernie's Insiders will be changing its name to "The Orange
and Brown Report" early in 2006. Look, we've
tried to explain this. Your
webmaster, who is about as patient as Paris Hilton is publicity-shy, is already
calling things "OBR" this and that. We believe that this is partially because he
is too lazy to make two different versions of world report logos. Dork.
