Browns Newest Safety New to Position

Browns feel seventh-round pick has high upside...

BEREA — The Browns went after a safety with their last choice in this year's draft. They took Justin Hamilton, a safety from Virginia Tech with their seventh-round choice.

Hamilton was a receiver at Virginia Tech until he was converted for his senior season to safety.

"Justin is an interesting prospect because he was on offense until this last year," Savage said. "He was impressive and we feel he was a player with a good upside."

Savage said Hamilton is an athlete who can help right away on special teams.

"We'll see if he can emerge as a player and help us on special teams," Savage said. "We think Justin is a guy who can help us."

Savage said his athleticism is impressive. He's 6-2 and 220 pounds and ran a 4.5 40-yard dash on his pro day workout.

"Generally, you don't switch someone from offense to defense unless he is a pretty good player," Romeo Crennel said.
