Exclusive: Wimbley Contract Negotiations

TheOBR.com is again the first to report on the status of contract negotiations between the Browns and top pick Kamerion Wimbley. Here's the latest...

According to a league source, negotiations between Cleveland Browns first-round selection Kamerion Wimbley's agent (Joe Linta) and the club are continuing this week.

One potential sticking point could be a potential sixth year on the contract. First-round picks (1-15) can receive up to six years on their rookie deals. Picks 16-32 up to five years. Rounds 2-7 up to four seasons. The first selection overall in this year's draft, DE Mario Williams, signed a five-year deal with the Houston Texans which includes an option for a sixth season.

Wimbley was the thirteenth selection in this year's draft, made after the Browns traded the number twelve selection to the Baltimore Ravens so that they could draft Haloti Ngata. The Browns are counting on Wimbley to help provide an outside pass rush that was sorely lacking in 2005.

Of the picks preceding Wimbley in this year's draft, only the aforementioned Mario Williams has signed a deal. The Browns open mini-camp when rookies report to Berea in slightly over two weeks.
