Browns-Saints: Gameballs and Goats

Kellen Winslow gets props from Browns fans for his return to the field and the form he displayed in college. Meanwhile, Maurice Carthon... well... he didn't do quite as well.

The Week's Results: Those of you snickering at Butch Davis' stint as the Der NFL Network's high commissar of draft expertise might throw up a little in your mouth today as two of Butch's 2004 draft picks helped his successor and finished in the top five in Gameballs and Goats. Meanwhile, the goats column was dominated by more recent additions. Strange, that.

No one on this team needs a game ball, they need some guts. What a joke of a team.

eucliddawg

Charlie looks like he has the skills and leadership to bring our team to the next level. Played a lot better than his two interceptions will reflect. Kellen's going to be a STAR.

19kosar19

Winslow is the best player on the team. Period.

mark zickefoose

Frye played all out the whole game, and so did Winslow. Damn few other players showed up.

skat007

Leigh Bodden continues to distinguish himself as the best player on this defense. - Charlie Frye held on to the ball too long a couple of times, but this offense wouldn't have done a thing if it hadn't been for his ability to make plays. If Northcutt doesn't drop that 3rd down play and Edwards holds on to that last ball, it is a very different game. - Kellen Winslow is finally here, and that is what we always hoped to see. Fire, determination, and incredible talent. Just wait until he shakes off the rust.

brinkcle

I'm done with the Browns. Been rising this wave since about 1972, but can't do it anymore.

naxos

Frye and Winslow. Only 2 guys who made a positive impact today.

dawgdc

Kellen Winslow showed why he was the 6th pick in the 2004 draft. If, he stays healthy we will finally have a Pro Bowl player on this team. Leigh Bodden shut down Joe Horn today.....he's the best Corner we have on this team.
Charlie brought this team back....my fear is the Mo is going to get him killed with those blind rollouts. Charlie needs to see where he's throwing or even running instead of being at a disadvantage running to his blindside!!!
I have faith like a fool, but...  GO BROWNS!!!!

writerdawg

Frye made some mistakes (held the ball too long, his INT), but overall it was a growth game for him and he did well. KWII played with fire I wish all of them had shown.

irishjt

I thought Fraley played solid enough on such short notice. Sean Jones had an interception and a fumble recovery, but we couldn't capitalize. Last but not least, K2 gets a gameball. 7 catches for 63 yards and a TD, I'll take that. It was good to see him healthy and making plays.

gbeachy50310

Losing to the Saints means NOBODY deserves a gameball. What a truly awful game. There might have been flashes of individual performances here and there, but overall this was a stinker and every player and coach will live with the stench.

kodiak

Frye still holds the ball too long, but he looked like Fran Tarkenton on a few plays.

doctorfresh

Winslow - We finally got to see the KWII we'd all been waiting for. He was mean, tough and full of energy.

Frye - I don't care what the haters will say, Frye & Winslow were the only reasons we had any sort of offensive spark in the second half at all. His ability to avoid the constant pressure and get some key throws off was the only reason we were in the game at all.

Washington - A couple of key run stops, especially at the goal line. He did what he was brought in to do - plug up the middle, and he did it wonderfully.

aqib

I know the defense gave up some 3rd down conversions but they kept us in the game by holding them to FGs. Kellen will be a monster for us.

crunkadelic

Kellen Winslow and Sean Jones were the only guys who looked like they wanted to play today.

montanadawg

Winslow - great game, proved he will be a star. Dawson - what has gotten into his leg on kickoffs?

noorthodoxy

Bodden and Sean Jones played very well today IMHO. Along with Baxter, Pool, and 'Cutch (when healthy)the secondary appears solid. Next week Cincy....we'll see.

dp10451

Winslow had a good game and had 2 TD's even though the refs only gave him one. Frye did a great job of finishing the game without a serious injury. And the fans deserve a gameball for laying out their hard earned cash to watch this poor performance. I'm trying to restrain myself here!

dawg4l

Me for putting up with all of you drunks.

plumpgrizzlybear

The three people who actually looked like they cared on the field. I saw more passion for the game in the pre-season than they showed here.

playbrowns

Who? Sean Jooooones. The pick and fumble recovery were the lone bright spots of the defense. K2 looked hungry and I loved his intensity. Did a decent job on kickoff and punt coverage. Kept Bush in check.

srqdawg

Winslow will be all that we've hoped for and showed it today. Cribbs for excellent kick-off returns. Phil Dawson was crushing his kick-offs. When Charlie runs he's exciting! All in all not much to be excited about.

spicydeigo

the offense finally showed up in the 2nd half, but it was too late, and when we needed the d to step up and spot them we let them go down the field and score. some of the positives kellen looked good, making plays blocking and yelling at the offense to get them fired up. great job.. frye looked good at times but he is a young qb and only his 6th start, but the thing that made me feel good is he threw a couple of good deep balls. its going to be a long season but as long as they continue to jell and improve that's all we can ask for. the thing to watch for is how we adjust for next weeks game. go browns

number1brownsfan

Frye made a couple mistakes, but it's only his second year, besides look at his o-line. Jones had two big plays, the INT and fumble recovery. Winslow was by far the best player the Browns had out there on the field!

jsawitzke@cox.net

Not great in the stats, but Frye played a great game today. Two really bad throws (one one his first INT, the other was way behind the receiver), but showed everything we could hope for. Winslow is obvious, and Big Ted really made life tough in the middle.

brownnoser

Gameball for Grantham, our D kept us in contention, even though we got 19 put up on us. Red Zone D from last year is still holdin on. Kellen's cockiness is still in tact as well as that massive chip on his shoulder, he'll be the next to be gameplanned against as Reuben was today Jones looked good w/ a pick & fumble recovery, definitely looked better than the outta place Brodney

avesice51

Bodden gets one for completely shutting down Joe Horn. He had a GREAT game.

gingerdeadman

Leigh Bodden is great

mdr

Seems like only a few players showed up for the game. Winslow plays with anger - this teams needs that - he's gonna be a beast. Thanks for finally showing up S. Jones. Bodden is a playa.

section 527 dawg

Welcome Back, K-II!! Keep those performances up! I give the Potato Festival a gameball because I TIVO'd the gave and went to the carnival instead....and am I ever glad I did!

clevelandfan

KWII - First of hopefully many NFL touchdowns, and a tremendous almost-td grab. Charlie Frye - Was under constant pressure, and made some spactacular plays on the run. Hopefully he'll get a little more protection next week and thereafter. Entire D - Same old same old, as they were on the field way to much, but they kept us in the game.

chico1227

Unck was there on every single special teams play and really disrupted that aspect of the game for the Saints.

deathbyeagle

Winslow is a legitimate Probowler...too bad he plays for this sh*tty team

chas dawg

Charlie Frye gets an honorable mention for his effort, not his play. It will be nice to see the day when his right arm isn't his third most important appendage.

magoothemutt

bodden-shut down corner, sean jones-ball hawk and some nice hits, winslow-the soldier is back!

jpw7218

Wow, the fact that I had to give a game ball to Cribbs for his returning average says a lot... Too bad better field position never helped this three and out offense.

clevelandcraig

It only takes about 20 seconds for me to go from high expectations to, the lows of reality. Bodden showed some fire on D, KWII and Frye did a nice job, Frye, will be a very tired man in about 2 weeks with all that running for his life he did. Shouldnt the linemen have more grass stains on their uniforms then the QB?

izdlizard

Winslow finally had his coming out party that we've waited 3 years to see. Bodden made Joe Horn invisible for a good portion of the day, not an easy task. Jones made some plays after a lnog wait also.

rfmc02

Leon Williams needs to get more playing time!!

mgrizut

Gameballs are obvious. All three, K2, Bodden and Sean Jones, played well. And for that, I'm grateful. Welcome back, Kellen. We love you.

t-dog

Two, count 'em, TWO unreturnable balls kicked into the endzone by the Human Battering Ram! If that doesn't give our fair City hope, nothing will!

This team is filled with goats. Worst team in many, many years. NO GUTS,NONE. If I was Lerner, I would start the house cleaning now, from the top down. This years team will be a joke all year. He needs to find some football players, start looking at PS... at least these players might want to play, not just collect a pay check.
WE have a team of people who cant think on the field or play like they care. Who do we take #1 in 2007.

eucliddawg

Awful playcalling by Mo, special thanks to Braylon's butterfingers and refs.

mark zickefoose

Maurice Carthon stays here until he shows ANY ability calling plays. Where the HELL was Joe Jurevicius all day? Where was the protection for Frye? Why did we run plays so predictably that everyone knew when and where we'd be? Where was the run defense we saw in preseason?

skat007

The offensive line was manhandled by a defense that isn't as good as the Browns made them look. Charlie was running for his life all day and Droughns only had 2 or 3 plays where there was any room to run. Kevin Shaffer has been unimpressive so far. - I love Braylon Edwards, but today he has to get the horns from me for letting that ball bounce out of his hands. It was a PERFECT pass, Braylon's got to catch that with the game in the balance. - The TV announcers were HORRIBLE!!! How many times do you have to repeat the exact same thing? And I mean, repeat the exact same words with the exact same inflection and the exact same tone of voice. Man, that was annoying broadcasting.

brinkcle

#$&%! THE BROWNS

naxos

Our O-Line is still bad after all this time. Our receivers still dropped passes and our OC still doesn't know how to use his players effectively.

dawgdc

Shaffer's holding penalty on the first play of the game set the tone. Plus the fact fact he was beat 200 times it seem, basically the whole O-line was beaten like a drum!!! Mo Carthon to me is the worst Coordinator in football. There is no reason that it should have taken 27 minutes and change to get 1 first down. It's because of Carthon we lost.....our defense didn't get to rest period!!! I said it 3 years ago and I said it last year DENNIS NORTHCUTT SUCKS. He can't catch a cold, if you see your QB in trouble why can't you catch the freakin ball and keep your feet inbounds at the same time? Andra Davis over ran plays all day long and Ralph Brown is inconsistent....you got beat by a 7th round draft choice on simple curl route for a touchdown. WOW!!!!

writerdawg

Absolutely the worst OC in the NFL. Made no adjustments in the first half when N.O. was putting 8 in the box. Despite a defense obviously designed to stop the run, he continually ran into the heart of it with no results. Then he called sweeps on third and one plays, and a botched draw play when there was still time near the Red Zone to take a shot at scoring a TD. He is awful. I want him fired.

zigzag420

Even with all the moves we made during the offseason, we never missed a beat. If anybody blames Frye for this loss, you need to go become a Bobsled fan. Our loss was because of 1.) Penalties 2.) Dropped passes 3.) Penalties.

irishjt

Naturally, Maurice Carthon gets a goathorn for being an idiot. Twenty bucks says he'll make this list every week. The offense as a whole played poorly. The D and special teams set them up nice many times and they did nothing with what they had. Frye cannot be holding on to the ball that long. I gave Ralph Brown a goathorn just because he sucks.

gbeachy50310

O-LINE for letting the Saints defense walk thru like a revolving door all day. D-LINE for their allowing 150 yard of rushing. TV ANNOUNCERS (Fox crew) for their 3-hour Reggie Bush lovefest (the 'magical feet' recurring theme was really too much). CARTHON for his overall pathetic play calling.

nybrownie

Were was the defense, no pass rush, no stopping the run...

deputydog9810

Carthon has to go. The way he called play plus his substitutions were insane!

theoz

Carthon must go!

kodiak

The team can't be this bad. I refuse to believe it.

doctorfresh

WR unit - Too many dropped passes at key times during the game. Northcutt's 3rd & 15 drop and Braylon's drop on the last play. If these guys would catch the ball when it's thrown right at them (like they're paid to do), we might win this game.  Mo - Horrendous playcalling. Three times on short yardage he calls a pitch back, one to a rookie. When you need inches, why toss it behind the line 5 yards? Makes no sense. He is on a very short leash.
O Line - Frye had no time to throw and had to scramble way too often. If they don't come together soon, we'll be looking at a hurt Frye and a year of Dorsey ahead of us. I shudder at the thought.

aqib

The offense let us down today. The play calling was highly questionable. Sweeps to the fullback on 3rd and one? The OL? Well its the Browns OL.  Frye made some bad reads. Do we need to put a GPS on Winslow? The last time he played for us Garcia couldn't find him, there were moments today he is running open and Frye doesn't look at him. Plus there were some flatout missed throws. He had some nice plays too, so I am not jumping ship on him, but when I watch the USC game Saturday night I will be keeping a close eye on John. Lastly my old friend Butch Davis. The problem is we are still a team that 2 years ago had less than nothing to start with, and the reason was that dumbass left no building blocks.

crunkadelic

The coaches didn't have the guys ready to play. Every time I saw a big pass play for the Saints, Ralph Brown was in coverage.

montanadawg

Mo - what are you doing?  BE - catch the ball dude  Cutt - see BE comment

noorthodoxy

Romeo loses a game at home vs. a mediocre team with a head coach coaching his first ever game. Pathetic. At least come out of the locker room ready to play. Is THAT too much to ask?

dualdawgs

ugly, unprepared

dp10451

O-line: Where were you? Can anyone knock his man on his ass? Coaches: See O-line. This team was not ready for the start of the regular season. Whose job is it to get them ready? And at last...the refs. I wasn't sure if they were in black and white or black and gold. Where were the yellow flags for N.O. in the first half? Everything seemed to go against the Browns.

dawg4l

That was just wrong dude, I mean common he was a kid with a disability. Whoever did this, should be thrown in jail for a loong loong time!

plumpgrizzlybear

Other than Sean Jones the coverage was terrible in the backfield. Penalties on the o-line killed any play we had over five yards.  The announcers couldn't have shown more love for Reggie Bush. It's pretty nice that you can be a superstar before the first half is over.  I am putting Grantham on the list, but suspect it is Romeo. Why isn't Whimbley starting? We start Jackson(rightfully so) but don't start our first round pick over a scrub linebacker. Whimbley is the only guy that made a single play on defense worth raving about other than jones.

playbrowns

Braylon looks like the second coming of Quincy Morgan/Antonio Bryant/Dennis Dropcutt. 2 interceptions in Frye's short career can be blamed on BE's stone hands.  I'd love to just blame it on Carthon cause that seems to be the thing to do, but I blame the entire coaching staff for not having this team's intensity at the level it should have been. Crennel admitted so in his presser and I find that disturbing and disheartening.  Shaffer and Coleman both had holding penalties at horrible times. When they weren't busy holding, they were ineffective at best in run and pass blocking. Terrible performance against a weak defense.

srqdawg

Maurice, among other things, running Vickers twice on the sweep is just retarded! Coleman and Shaffer - vets that should know better although the whole OL sucked big time.

spicydeigo

new players same ugly result. what an ugly first half on offense. penalties and turnovers kill us again. also on defense i am sick of the bend but don't break, we need to blitz more and get more pressure on the QB. and where was the run d i saw in preseason. i think we gave up 150 rushing yards. but it is the first game hopefully we will make the write adjustments and turn this around we have a lot of tough games coming up in the next few weeks. go browns...

number1brownsfan

Shaffer, for costing us 6 and almost getting Frye killed! The WR, for dropping too many balls!!!  And of course Maurice Carthon, for his always impeccable play-calling. If you only have 1 yard to go, you don't pass, you don't run toss sweeps, you "PUNCH-IT UP THE GUT"!!!

jsawitzke@cox.net

Carthon must go. Can't keep running FB sweeps in short-yardage. Love Edwards but a star WR doesn't miss that last pass. Crennel gets the horns because he's responsible for the team's preparation, and they looked like they were playing their first preseason game today. What a joke.

brownnoser

I blame MoC for being an a freakin idiot.  I blame the O-Line for lack of communication & lack of run blocking (see above). I blame Nick Eason for being a P@$$%

phelix17

We just stink.

gingerdeadman

....

dazedawg

You need more than three choices for this category.

mdr

Worst OC, ever. Braylon - your paid to make those catches.  TV guys blowing their wads over R. Bush - almost as bad as the Browns Offense.

amvet11

The offense played horrible.

walldog

I need more boxes for goathorns. I would like to add the entire OL,RAC,MO C, defensive front seven and Randy Lerner for not refunding every fan their ticket money and not docking just about the whole team a game a game check for that putrid display of lack of effort.

section 527 dawg

It's a shame that, even though the beer process are not nearly as bas as they are at the Browns games, I was not able to get nearly as drunk as I was hoping to - given the horrendous game yesterday!! They were totally unprepared, looked lost at times, and CARTHON MUST BE FIRED!!!!

betterhands

Mo Carthon was a huge problem last year and continues to be our most glaring problem this year. how long will Romeo continue to stand behind him? he better be ripping him behind closed doors.

clevelandfan

O-line - one word...horrible.  Mauice Carthon - How many times do you get 3rd and very short, and call a sweep?!?!?!?! Horrible play calling ALL DAY!  Romeo Crennel - I give Romeo credit, the team came out in the 2nd half with a fire lit under them, but where the hell was that fire at the start of the game?!?!?

chico1227

Sweep to your backup fullback on third-and-1. Need I say more.

mjones85

Lerner gets a goat horn only because Carthon should have been fired at halftime.

wolfpack2

moe must go!!!! WHAT KIND OF PLAY CALLING IS THAT???????????

deathbyeagle

Braylon has gotta make that catch. No pass rush and the opposing team rushes for 150 yards....sound familiar??  Dropcutt is back! Yippie!!!!!!!!!!!!  Every time we have a big play there is a penalty--its like the refs can't believe we did something good and say: "This can't be right, there must be a penalty somewhere"

chas dawg

Shaffer... I got nothing, just go sit in a corner and think about what you did. (Or didn't)  Mo C - Toss sweep with the quick guys, north south with the big guys. Got it?  WRs - Northcutt & Braylon - Nice hands, way to pull it together when it matter most. Joe J, enjoy the Cleveland Clinic, it's where all our big acquisitions spend their game days. Travis Wilson - Best WR in the draft! Inactive while a Saints 7th rounder shreds us.

apvic

why give a cushion to the recievers of 10 yards when we are going to blitz on 3rd and 5 ???  the line play was atrocious !!!! shame on them for taking money to play the way they did..

magoothemutt

edwards-just catch the damn ball, shaffer-nice hold there buddy, carthon-worst play calling since metcalf up the middle

jpw7218

If Winslow was hurt, this offense would have been lucky to get 50 total yards... All from Frye's scrambling. Carthon may prove to be Crennel's biggest mistake as he is woefully obvious in his play calling, and when not woefully obvious he is woefully illogical...

clevelandcraig

I think that the tempo for the players is drawn from the head coach, he shows so little life on the sideline, if he is as upbeat in the locker room, it is no wonder we are sleepy out there. I want to take a nap watching them, it would be a better use of my time. Shaffer got tossed around and looked lost for the whole game. Washington let Fain(the rag doll)of all people run right over him. and finally Carthon steal someone else's game plan for God sake, you do not know how to call plays. Next week I vote for your mom Carthon.

izdlizard

What would have happened if there was no hold on the first play? Shaffer cost us from dealing the Saints a crushing blow on the first play from scrimmage and it took the offense the rest of the half to recover from the blow. Taking that long goes on the coaching staff.

mgrizut

Goats are even more obvious. I appreciate Braylon's awesome talent and work ethic rehabbing. But catch that ball. Just do it.  I've never called for a coaches head in 22 years of being a Browns fan. But I'm calling for this one: Fire Mo Carthon. Pretty please.  The O-Line was worthless. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt for having a lack of cohesiveness with the revolving door at center, the injury to Tucker, etc. But, seriously. They're all veterans. And at the end of the day, blocking is blocking, damn the various team terminology. Just put a hat on a guy and block him!

bigdaddy78

ugh....ly

indybones

Fire Carthon now!

orechia

Charlie Frye played 2 good drives? He lost the game.

browns899

It all begins and ends with good line play. Our O Line is pathetic!!!!!

So many choices, so few goat horns to award....
