Browns Look for Bye to Regroup

The OBR's Fred Greetham was in Berea today as an unhappy Romeo Crennel answered questions from the press a day after the team went to 1-4 on the season. Fred and the rest of the media had a chance to talk to the players as well, and this is what transpired...

BEREA - There was not a lot of positive to come out of the Browns fourth loss in five games, but one positive is the Browns have two weeks to rally the troops and regroup because it's bye week.

Sentiment in the locker room was similar.

"We've got to turn things around," Andra Davis said. "We're 1-4 and that's not good."

"Losing is contagious and we have a bitter feeling in our system right now," Sean Jones said. "We have to get that changed."

Romeo Crennel's theme was consistency.

"As this team continues to develop, I'm not discouraged about the effort," he said. "The players generally do what we want them to do. We're just not as consistent as we want to be. As we become more consistent, we'll be better.

"Defensively, we hung in there for most of the game," he said. "We have to develop more consistency. Offensively, we have to get some consistency there, too. We didn't move the ball as consistently as we'd like to. We're going to try to look at the things that are good and try to eliminate the negative and accentuate the positives."

The Browns kept the Panthers from converting a third down conversion the whole game as they were 0-of-11.

"We did a good job on third down, but we have to come together as a whole," Orpheus Roye said. "We need the bye week to get healthy."

The Browns are hoping to get their secondary healthy over the break. Gary Baxter and Leigh Bodden did not play against the Panthers.

Changes in the Wind?:  Crennel said the coaching staff will look at some of the backups this week in practice and evaluate if any changes will be made.

"Part of the bye week process is to look at the personnel and see if you need to make some changes," he said. "We'll look at the backup players and see if we need to make changes."

With Dennis Northcutt injuring his rib area, WR Joe Jurevicius might be moved into his starting slot.

What About Mo: Crennel was asked about the call on third-and-inches of FB Lawrence Vickers throwing a halfback pass that fell incomplete.

"If it doesn't work, I have those same frustrations," Crennel said. "We thought the play was a good play when we called it."

Crennel was asked to evaluate offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon's job so far.

"I think you have to look at the team and we're 1-4," he said. "We haven't done as well as we hoped to."

Crennel was asked if there will be any changes on the coaching staff.

"We're going to evaluate that and see what happens."

Injury Update: Crennel said WR Dennis Northcutt had a rib area injury and will be evaluated on Wednesday. He also mentioned that DB Brodney Pool had a hip bruise. S Brian Russell injured his ankle and was wearing a boot in the locker room.
