Jerry Sherk: Chat Transcript, Part II

I don't remember when we've gotten so much positive feedback after a guest chat as we've gotten from Jerry Sherk's appearance last night. Jerry was a fantastic guest, and we've already invited him back for another chat in the future. If you're a long-time fan of the Browns, you're going to want to read this one!

ArtBtz Welcome Jerry Sherk!
teco JERRY!!!
BryanK Welcome, Jerry
Ramllov Hello Jerry
WebDawg Hey Sheik
redright Suit him up
DPG I just watched HBO's Inside the NFL, Peter King reported that Butch D NEEDED to see the teams psychologist Sun night
wideright Jerry, will you suit up again?
JerrySherk Hi Everybody, Jerry Sherk here. Where's that Web Dawg?
WebDawg Lurking Jerry
wideright can you play O line?
WebDawg Tell some stories tonight Jerry.
JerrySherk I'm pretty sure I can't play. It takes me a while to get moving in the morning. But after I have my cup o java, watch out!
Ramllov Jerry do you get to any of the Cleveland games, since 1999?
WebDawg Rookie stories
pegasus Hey Jerry, Based on your size, speed and moves, if you entered the NFL now, do you think you would be better suited for DE?
teco Jerry who was your mentor early on with the Browns?
JerrySherk My mentor with the Browns? That's a good question. I stuck pretty much to myself.
scaryDawg Did any of the Browns players ever beat up David Modell?
teco lol
JerrySherk Nobody I know ever beat up David. He was too small!
redright Jerry, can you do a little coaching on the side and get thid D-line to smash?
wideright Hey Jerry, have you watched Warren much? What's your opinion?
JerrySherk I haven't watched Warren much. We don't get many games out here in CA!
redright Get the dish Jerry
BryanK What DL's impress you today?
JerrySherk The Question about where I would play. I think I would have to bulk up more and play D.T. I was 245. I'd have to get to about 280.
wideright more happy meals
WebDawg 68 sacks at 245.......pretty damn good.
wideright who was the toughest O lineman you faced?
JerrySherk I faced a guy named Robert Pratt from the Colts. He wasn't famous, but I could never do anything against him.
ericthebrown 245 would just make you the best MLB we ever had
wideright i remember him
redright You could work on your footwork and dance moves an be a LB :-)
JerrySherk My best kept secret was that I was really slow in the 40. I was fast for 10-20 yards, but my 40 time sucked!
ArtBtz Yeah, our starting linebackers are broken :-(
pegasus Yeah, you'd have to practice the Helmut heave too.
wideright i have read many o linemen that played in your day that said you were the toughest guy they faced
JerrySherk Somebody asked for a couple stories. Let me take a second and type one. I'll send it out every 30 seconds or so.
ArtBtz Cool
teco do it Jer
JerrySherk When I played my first preseason game for the Browns we played the Rams in the Coleseum. We went down and scored...
JerrySherk ... and we got stuck with 10 guys kicking the extra point.
JerrySherk There was this guy standing next to me, a rookie.
JerrySherk I says, ""Bill, aren't you on the extra point team?
JerrySherk He says , No, I'm on the field goal team!""
JerrySherk I knew he was in pretty big trouble then.
redright Did you throw him out onto the field?
JerrySherk He looked like the cat who had swallowed the canary. He was so pleased that he wasn't messing up. He wasn't on the extra point team, but he was on the field goal team.
redright A coaches dream---doing exactly as told.
JerrySherk Coach Modzelewski came along and said, HOW MANY F-----G GUYS DOES IT TAKE TO KICK THE G-- D--- FOOTBALL?
JerrySherk Funny thing is, the guy made the team. Pretty sad.
JerrySherk End of that story. Guess you had to be there.
JerrySherk More questions?
scaryDawg What are you doing these days? Although you said you're a loner, do you participate in any activities involving your team mates or CA Browns-backer types?
teco do u still bleed orange?
JerrySherk I stil bleed orange in a way. Browns are by far my favorite team. Good thing I'm not too close to it now though. Games like last Sunday would've sent me for a loop.
redright You must have some GREAT stories with Mo.
teco I knew you were with us Jerry
JerrySherk Mo was a great mentor. He treated me perfectly. He was a perfect mentor.
ArtBtz What would have happened if someone lost a game like that back in the 70s?
JerrySherk We had stupid things happen back in the 70's also. Turkey Joe Jones was offsides in one game about 7 times.
WebDawg Who do you keep in touch with from the team?
JerrySherk I keep in touch with Sipe and Dieken, that's about it.
Guest104 Jerry, the old days are a little fuzzy, but wasn't it a staph infection that ended your playing days a bit early?
JerrySherk The staph ended my run. It was in my 10th year. I played one game my 11th year, played the whole year my 12th, but wasn't strong, so I left the game.
pegasus What do you think about all the showboating in the NFL now?
ArtBtz What are you up to these days?
JerrySherk What I'm up to? Hang on. I'll send it through.
Guest104 I DO remember we sure missed you back then
scaryDawg You was da man!
JerrySherk I develop youth mentoring programs. I'm a consultant for the State of California. I also develop employee to employee mentoring programs. Website is at mentorms.com.
ArtBtz We'll link the site tomorrow.
JerrySherk Webdawg helped me develop my site. I've never met the man, but he's my bro. We talk all the time on the phone. He's now the webdawg and the depot dawg.
ArtBtz Take a bow, Webdawg :-)
JerrySherk He's still eating those Home Depot Hot Dogs. We've got to do an intervention with him (smile).
wideright and he's alive?
WebDawg Right now it's a taco bell burrito Jerry.
JerrySherk He's alive and burping.
JerrySherk The only man to eat a hot dog wrapped in a burrito.
wideright The sporting News after drafting Warren said "" he has the chance to be the best DT since Jerry Sherk""
pegasus You and Walter Johnson were probably best tackle tandem in Browns history...any thoughts on Zoom.
JerrySherk I'll talk about Walter.
JerrySherk Walt was an intimidating figure.
JerrySherk When I came to the Browns, he was about 275.
JerrySherk That was big back then. He was solid muscle.
JerrySherk He like the role of the intimidator. He didn't talk much. Bristled with pride when people talked about how tough he was.
JerrySherk I gave him my tickets for the first game of the season when I was a rookie.
JerrySherk He was so intimidating, that I never asked him for the money.
JerrySherk He was a great def. tackle.
JerrySherk Our skills blended perfectly.
teco How'd walt treat you Jerry as a rookie?
JerrySherk On a stunt he would move people out of the way, I would come around the corner.
Guest104 you BOTH were great
WebDawg Jerry, is the story about your first visit to Cleveland too long to type? The one about the HOFer who picked you up from the airport and made you relax by cracking a joke.
JerrySherk I'll tell the story requested by WebDawg.
JerrySherk As a rookie.
JerrySherk ... I was picked up at the airport by Lou the Toe.
JerrySherk ... He was retired, but helping the Browns out...
JerrySherk We went to the Hollenden House to get a sandwich...
JerrySherk I was a scared rookie, and he was a legend...
JerrySherk He couldn't get me to loosen up, I was so quiet...
JerrySherk Pretty soon, two ladies walk in the diner at the Hollenden House...
JerrySherk where we were eating a sandwich...
JerrySherk One was beautiful...
JerrySherk the other was big and very large (too many Depot Dogs)...
JerrySherk Lou looks at me...
JerrySherk He looks at the women coming through the door...
JerrySherk He looks back at me...
JerrySherk and he says...
JerrySherk ""Jerry, Yours don't look so Good!""
teco lol
pegasus lol
JerrySherk It cracked me up. I started talking to him after that.
WebDawg Knowing you and Lou .... that story cracked me up. Big time!
JerrySherk That trip was incredible.
ericthebrown I somehow knew I shouldn't take a drink at that moment
JerrySherk That first visit to the stadium.
JerrySherk It was a spring afternoon.
JerrySherk I walked on the upper deck and looked over.
JerrySherk The stadium was empthy.
JerrySherk There was a guy mowing the lawn...
JerrySherk I got chills just looking at that huge stadium...
JerrySherk and thinking I might play there some day.
JerrySherk end of that little tale.
pegasus Jerry, for a few year Walter was a pro rassler, with your college wrestling background did you ever think of donning a mask and getting into the ring?
JerrySherk I didn't really...
JerrySherk I was a wrestler at Oklahoma State...
JerrySherk and we looked down on pro wrestling..
JerrySherk I never told Walter that, though!
teco lol
wideright jerry where are you in Ca?
JerrySherk I'm just north of San Diego. Encinitas. It's beautiful.
wideright i was just there it is beautiful
Ramllov I always thought you and Walter were a great set of Defensive Tackles
JerrySherk Sipe lives about 5 miles away. He's a coach now.
JerrySherk He's in his second year and never has lost a game.
howldawg How much of the year was spent getting ready for the season & Who was the toughest runner you had to try and stop?
teco A coach where Jerry?
Ramllov Do you ever talk with Walter Johnson?
JerrySherk I'll answer about getting ready. then take other Q's.
JerrySherk I usually took one month off..
JerrySherk then I would work out anywhere and everywhere...
JerrySherk I didn't need weights or a gym...
JerrySherk I would do sit ups and push ups and run, run, run. I was in pretty good shape.
redright Jerry can you tell us anything about Red Right 88 that we fans didn't see?
JerrySherk Red right 88. Yep...
JerrySherk I was injured, on the sidelines.
JerrySherk I had mixed emotions about that game.
JerrySherk It was the first year that I was injured the whole year...
JerrySherk and the team was having its best year...
JerrySherk It was like watching your girl go to the dance...
howldawg ouch
JerrySherk with someone else...
JerrySherk still, I wanted us to win badly.
JerrySherk ...more to come..
JerrySherk Sipe threw the pass, and it was over...
JerrySherk He later told me he begged Sam to kick it....
JerrySherk But it was really nobody's fault...
JerrySherk He just happened to get rushed at the right moment...
JerrySherk I lived in the country...
JerrySherk Brian did too...
JerrySherk The next day...
JerrySherk Monday, I was driving into practice...
JerrySherk I saw Brian in my rearview mirror as we came up 71...
JerrySherk I was wondering what he must be thinking...
JerrySherk His face was blank and drawn...
JerrySherk I later told him...
JerrySherk as did everyone else on the team...
JerrySherk that he was the reason that we were there in the first place...
JerrySherk I believe it was a few days later...
JerrySherk that he was named MVP of the league...
JerrySherk so I think that made him feel a little better...
JerrySherk We joke about it every now and then...
HackinDawg Ever camped out in the tree house in Pennsylvania with Romaninszyn? hehehe Good to see ya typin' Jerry!
teco goosebumps Jerry
JerrySherk I tell him that his ""unconscious"" told him to throw that interception...
JerrySherk there's something about success in the NFL that can ruin you...
JerrySherk When you are successful, it's very likely that you will get frozen in your life...
JerrySherk You become a football player and nothing else...
JerrySherk It sounds kind of heavy, but it's true...
JerrySherk If you become a hall of famer, that's all you are (for most people)...
JerrySherk You get known for that and it is too hard to break out of the mold...
JerrySherk Must sound pretty funny, but I've looked at life that way. It's the struggle that makes you...
JerrySherk not the success.
JerrySherk I wouldn't like to be trapped totally in a football player persona...
JerrySherk that's why I moved out of Cleveland...
JerrySherk Not that I don't love being know as a player too... I'm proud of it...
JerrySherk Hard to explain both sides of that one...
JerrySherk Next question?
Guest104 I understand completely Jer
scaryDawg Thanks, Jerry. Keep up the good struggle!
redright WOW, I always thought that they would kick on third down because of the weather and 50+ yrs of watching the Browns that one play--is the worse. Thanks for sharing that tale. I had always wondered about that play and had hoped it wasn't called by Sipe.
ArtBtz Jerry, I've heard tales that Turkey Joe would occasionally, um, er, spit at the opposing quarterbacks before a play. Terry Bradshaw's name has been mentioned. Can you confirm this horrible rumor?
JerrySherk I don't think Joe did that. Joe didn't do anything with much purpose. He wasn't mean either. Just a big puppy.
ArtBtz It's been nagging at me a long time.
teco lol
ArtBtz Thanks Jerry, one of my greatest football curiosities has been answered.
JerrySherk RedRigh 88 will live on forever.
JerrySherk I've heard in in comercials when I'm back in Cleveland.
Ramllov Jack Gregory played DE for the Browns, why didn't they keephim?
JerrySherk It's part of the culture. About Jack.
redright Can you tell the group how Joe TURKEY Jones got his nickname? Where you part of it?
JerrySherk Jack had a personality conflict with Nick Skorich...
JerrySherk they seemed to hate each other...
JerrySherk Jack was a great player. A great drinker at the time too, I must say...
Ramllov Jack always seemed to be the missing player they needed
JerrySherk He would go out on the town every night...
JerrySherk come in smelling like booze, staggering in his locker...
JerrySherk He would say, ""Never Again,"" and then..
JerrySherk he would go out the next night and get drunk.
JerrySherk ...He was...
JerrySherk a great natural talent...
JerrySherk a great ball player...
JerrySherk and a very good person...
JerrySherk But he did like his partying.
Ramllov Thanks for sharing that Jerry
JerrySherk Funny story...
JerrySherk When Jack came back in the late 70s.
JerrySherk He was second team behind Alzado...
JerrySherk ...WE played Dallas on Monday Night...
JerrySherk Alzado got hurt in the first Quarter...
JerrySherk They put Gregory in...
JerrySherk I sacked Roger Staubach 4 times...
JerrySherk My last great game....
JerrySherk years later...
JerrySherk I looked at the film...
JerrySherk it's the only one I have. Somebody gave it to sipe...
JerrySherk and he gave it to me..
JerrySherk ... I looked at it closely...
JerrySherk and the reason I had such a great game...
JerrySherk was that Gregory came in and played beside me...
JerrySherk Alzado was a great player...
JerrySherk but he didn't like to do line stunts...
JerrySherk he liked to stay outside...
JerrySherk Jack and I had those long slender bodies...
JerrySherk We had played together..
JerrySherk for several years early during my career...
JerrySherk Our bodies were suited for stunts....
JerrySherk We could pick each others guys off easily...
JerrySherk That night with Dallas, Jack kept slashing down on those stunts...
JerrySherk and he knocked my guard off several times...
JerrySherk and I became a star again.
JerrySherk if Alzado were left in...
JerrySherk I wouldn't have done as well... funny thing is...
JerrySherk I didn't realize it until about 20 years later when someone gave me the film.
JerrySherk End of that story.
redright ALZADO AND GREGORY ----that's a pair that'd beat a full house!
ArtBtz I remember that game well... that was an incredible game.
Ramllov Thanks for that story
JerrySherk Those two aren't even in the deck. They would have to invent a new card game.
pegasus Wasn't that game in 1979? I still have a Beta tape of it somewhere.
JerrySherk That was in 79...
ArtBtz Jerry, this has been awesome... you are welcome back here anytime.
howldawg thanks for the stories jerry really enjoyed them.
JerrySherk Funny thing, it's the only game I have on film..
pegasus great stories
ArtBtz One of my all-time favorite Browns games...
JerrySherk there weren't too many recorders back then. But we did have face masks.
ArtBtz Hee hee...
howldawg lol
redright Jerry GREAT listening to you. appreciate it
JerrySherk Great being here. The time went so fast. Are we done?
ArtBtz Thanks for staying with us so long... I know you were told 30 mins or so.
redright Only if you say so
teco Jerry this has been easily one of the best player chats that we've had...tks for coming and please come back!
JerrySherk I haven't even talked about Webdawg enough!
WebDawg Thank Jerry for stopping by. I know how busy you are. Your the best!
ArtBtz LOL... what else does he eat?
Ramllov It is a fast moving chat, thanks Art and Jerry
LetsGoBrowns01 MOTIONS/happy.gif jerry, I started watching the Browns in 1979..mostly because I thought Brian Sipe was cute!
JerrySherk I'll be willing to stay for awhile. But it's probably past your bedtimes if you are in Cleveland.
teco Jerry how was Sam to play for?
Guest104 Jerry...you definitely brought back some goosebumps for me tonight.. thanks much for coming
pegasus I'm in Texas, I'
JerrySherk I though Brian was cute too. But he did and does have one flaw. He has a flat bottom!
JerrySherk Doesn't see to bother his wife, though.
LetsGoBrowns01 lol, Jerry! Thanks for some fabulous games, I became totally hooked on the game
JerrySherk Over and out.
Ramllov goodnight
howldawg thanks jerry & art
teco wow gang... that was priceless
ArtBtz No problem... that was a pleasure.
