The Orange and Brown Report has learned that the Browns are chasing after rookie free agent LB Brian Crum, but face competition with the Kansas City Chiefs for his services. Our sources have told us that both teams have made offers to the Florida linebacker.
Crum bears some similar to Miami's Leon Williams, plucked out of obscurity during the 2006 draft, in that he is a generally underappreciated defender who lacked opportunity until late in his career. Crum could be a solid weak-side linebacker and was rated by Scout.com's Tony Pauline as a possible mid-to-late round selection after making tremendous progress one stepping into the starting linebacker role as a senior.
Possibly appealing to defensive-minded head coach Romeo Crennel, Crum is a disciplined defender who stays in his zone rather than free-lancing, and is quick to the ball although he needs to work on taking better angles to the ballcarrier.
