"I think I said before I started on defense that I felt I could be a top player in the league," Jones said. "Before it's all said and done, I want people to say that I was a good player."
Romeo Crennel likes the way Jones finished the 2007 season and is ready for Jones to keep it going.
"In the latter part of last year, Sean Jones became a very aggressive player and started making plays," Crennel said. "Hopefully, he'll pick up where he left off and get off from the beginning of the season."
Jones had 107 and 105 tackles, respectively the past two seasons. He also had five interceptions in each season. The additions on the front seven should allow him and Brodney Pool to make even more plays.
"We've been talking about it the whole off-season," Jones said. "If you don't have guys up front, it makes it tough to overcome for everybody. Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams should make our defense better."
Jones said he wants to be more consistent in his play.
"I like to be consistent," he said. "I want my play to be as one of the best safeties in the league."
Jones is in his final year of his contract and he said he wants to stay with the Browns.
"I feel that I'm a solid player both on and off the field," Jones said. "I'm a dependable player who plays the game of football."
Rogers, K2 Rest: Crennel gave DL Shaun Rogers and TE Kellen Winslow the Tuesday afternoon off from practice. Several other players continued to just run on the sideline. Some of those missing practice were OL Seth McKinney, FB Lawrence Vickers, TE Steve Heiden (knee) and DL Corey Williams (shoulder).
Heiden said his back that underwent surgery is alright and he's trying to get on the field.
"I'll be out there as soon as I can," he said. "But, my back is fine."
Crennel said Williams will probably be held out for a couple of more days.
Irish Unite: Richard Finch, winner of the Irish Open, was at practice and watching K Phil Dawson kick field goals. LS Ryan Pontbriand and Dawson took turns swinging golf clubs under Finch's observance.
