Flash Analysis: Lane on the Roster Cuts

Today's list of roster cuts contained a number of predictable moves, but others which might raise an eyebrow or two. Here are quick takes on each released player from OBR Football Analyst Lane Adkins.

Waived

TE Brad Cieslak - Potentially productive talent who was seemingly just caught up in what is a strong area of quality and depth for the Cleveland Browns. Cieslak should get a look with another team.

DB A.J. Davis - Second-year CB can run, but did not display the ability to be consistent in coverage. He was a liability in run support.

WR Efrem Hill - Special teams type player, did contribute but does not provide actual depth.

TE Kolomona Kapanui - Shows blocking ability, but the team is deep at TE and FB, leaving this rookie expendable.

DB Travis Key - Late signee in training camp who walked in and made plays. Undersized, Key showed the heart and desire to stick on this roster and could be a practice squad candidate.

OL James Lee - Raw and reasonably impressive LT. Lee has come a long way in a short period of time. If he's snot picked up by another team, Lee could be a practice squad candidate.

WR Lance Leggett - Raw and athletic. Leggett displayed some serviceable qualities, but inconsistency in routes and hands left him expendable.

LB David McMillan - Move should come as no surprise. McMillan has only shown to be capable on special teams.

DB Brandon Mitchell - Another late camp addition, Mitchell basically played the role of roster filler, but has athletic ability/ O would not rule out seeing him return.

LB Chase Ortiz - A little short on speed and quickness to be a legitimate OLB, but plays every play as it is the last.

OL Jonathan Palmer - Big man that simply isn't that good.

DB Jereme Perry - Perry thought he was going to make this roster, as did many others. In the end, the CB didn't make plays on the field nor in practice sessions.

DL Melila Purcell - Beefed up to play DE in the 3-4, but the added weight slowed down a player which relied on quickness. Was never a factor in practice sessions.

K Jason Reda - Browns got a good look at the kicker in the event Dawson gets hurt. He provided relief for Phil Dawson through the practice season.

WR Steve Sanders - Somewhat surprising move, as Sanders had played and practiced well this off-season. Could again find himself on the practice squad.

WR Travis Wilson - Strong off-season and training camp was not enough to save this third-year under-achiever.

Terminated-Vested Veteran

LB Shantee Orr - Surprise termination, as Orr had appeared to have a strong training camp and filled multiple roles.

Waived-Injured

OL Derrick Morse - Big offensive lineman needs grooming, as he is raw.

OL Marvin Philip - Training camp was cut short due to injury.

DL Chase Pittman - Was fighting for a roster bid and was on the radar.

RB Travis Thomas - Project type RB is a capable special teams type player. Could find his way back in Cleveland at a later time.
