Ravens Fly Past Browns

Fred Greetham reports on the Browns self-destruction from Cleveland Browns Stadium, where the Baltimore Ravens took advantage of poor offensive execution to win 37-27...

Cleveland - It happened again.

With the Browns trying to mount a drive to at least tie the game, Derek Anderson threw an interception to Terrell Suggs, who returned it 35 yards for a touchdown and the Browns lost 37-27 to the Ravens.

The Browns scored 17 unanswered points to build a 27-13 lead, but allowed the Ravens to score 24 unanswered themselves to take a win from the Browns and put a serious damper on the team's playoff hopes.

The Browns are now 3-5 overall and 1-3 in the AFC North.

Even after the Ravens battled back to tie the game, Braylon Edwards dropped what could have been a 77 yard touchdown pass as he beat Evan Oglesby and Anderson delivered it right there, but Edwards couldn't hang on—and neither could the Browns.

The two teams were all knotted up at the half as Phil Dawson kicked a career best 54-yard field goal with three seconds to play. The Browns showed little offense, but took advantage of a 92-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Josh Cribbs for their touchdown.

Baltimore put a quick 10 points on the board in the first quarter as they took advantage of good field position. The Ravens started at the Browns' 42 and 47 on their first two possessions. The Ravens started a third time in the first half at the 50.

The Browns dug themselves a hole on the first possession, after two penalties and a poor 20-yard punt by Dave Zastudil. The Browns forced the Ravens into an apparent field goal attempt, but had 12 men on the field and gave the Ravens another shot on third down. Shaun Rogers broke in and tackled for a one-yard loss. The Ravens were called for holding but the Browns declined the penalty and allowed the Ravens' Matt Stover to kick a 41-yard field goal with 10:40 to play in the first quarter with 3-0.

The Browns started moving the ball offensively after a 15-yard pass to Kellen Winslow and a 13-yard pass to Jamal Lewis. However, a false start on Winslow and then a sack on Derek Anderson put the Browns in a third and long situation. Anderson threw a short pass to Syndric Steptoe, who fumbled and Oglesby picked it up and returned it to the Browns' 47.

Two plays later, Joe Flacco hit Mark Clayton for a 46-yard touchdown pass as Clayton ran by Brandon McDonald with 5:19 to play and the Ravens had a 10-0 lead.

However, it took the Browns just 14 seconds to rebound as Cribbs took the ensuing kickoff and raced 92 yards for a touchdown and the Browns were down just 10-7 with 5:05 to play in the first quarter.

After both teams traded punts, the Browns tied the score at 10-10 as Dawson kicked a 23-yard field goal. The Browns went 11 plays and 74 yards as they took 5:39 off of the clock. Anderson hit Steven Heiden for 20 yards to get the drive going to the 40. A 10-yard pass to Winslow moved the ball to the Ravens' 39. Anderson then hit Braylon Edwards for a 23-yard gain to the 15. After a three yard gain on third down, Dawson kicked the field goal with 5:50 to play in the first half.

The Ravens regained the lead 13-10 with 29 seconds left in the first half on a 32-yard field goal by Stover. The Ravens went 66 yards in 12 plays, taking 5:12 off the clock.

The big plays for the Ravens were a 26 yard run by Ray Rice as he broke loose to the Browns' 30. Moments later, Flacco hit Derrick Mason for 14 yards and a first down to the 10. On third-and-goal from the 8, Shaun Rogers broke through and sacked Flacco at the 14. The Ravens then settled for the field goal to make it 13-10 with 29 seconds to play in the first half.

The Browns quickly tied the score with three seconds left as Dawson kicked a career long 54-yard field goal. The Browns took the short kickoff and moved quickly up the field on a pass to Winslow for 13 yards and then to the Ravens' 37 on a pass from Anderson to Edwards for 17 yards. The Browns kicked the field goal on third down with eight seconds on the clock.

The Browns took a 17-10 lead with 13:05 to play in the third quarter as Anderson and Edwards hooked up for a touchdown. The defense forced the Ravens to punt on their first series and Cribbs took the punt and went 32 yards to the Ravens' 28. On the first play, Anderson hit Edwards in the end zone for the score as Edwards wrestled the ball out of the awaiting arms of Frank Walker.

The Browns extended their lead to 27-13 with 6:07 to play as Jason Wright took a swing pass from Anderson in on third down. The Browns went 72 yards in 4:57 for the score. A pass interference penalty called as interfered with Winslow kept the drive going. A pass to Edwards for 18 yards took the ball to the Ravens' 40. Anderson then hit Winslow on a 20-yard slant to the 15.

Lewis had a seven-yard run to the eight on first down to set up Wright's score.

The Ravens came right back after the score and scored a touchdown themselves to make it 27-20 with 1:10 to play in the third quarter as Le'Ron McClain took it in from the one. The score was set up by an 18-yard run by Ray Rice. The Ravens went 11 plays and 79 yards, taking 4:12 off the clock.

Moments later, the Ravens tied the game at 27-27 with 13:57 left in the game as the Ravens went 42 yards in three plays. The Ravens forced a quick three-and-out to end the third quarter and Yamon Figurs took the punt back 23 yards to the Browns' 42. A pass to Mason took the ball to the 28. On the next play, Flacco hit Mason again and he took it 28 yards for the score. Eric Wright fell down, leaving Mason uncontested.

The Browns went three-and-out as Edwards dropped a long pass from Anderson on third down and the Browns had to punt.

From their own 33, the Ravens lined up as they though were going to go for the first down on fourth-and-inches. They took the delay of game penalty and punted.

The Browns dug themselves a hole with a penalty on the punt return and after an offensive pass interference penalty on Winslow, the Browns punted from near their end zone.

The Ravens took a 30-27 lead with 5:36 to play on a Stover 22-yard field goal. The Ravens took over at their own 37 with 7:30 to play and Rice took off for 60 yards on first down and was finally dragged down bu Brandon McDonald at the Browns' three. On third down from the two, Shaun Smith dropped McClain for a two-yard loss forcing the field goal.

The Browns could do nothing on offense after Cribbs returned the kickoff to the 40 and punted back to the Ravens with 4:30 to play. After a penalty on the return, the Ravens took over on their own seven.

After a false start, the Ravens were faced with a third-and-four at their own 13. Flacco threw incomplete to Clayton and the Ravens punted. Cribbs took the ball nine yards to the 44 with 3:25 to play.

After two ineffective plays, Anderson threw an attempted screen to Wright and it was right to Suggs, who took it 42 yards for the score with 2:43 to play to make it 37-27..

Mr. Rogers: DL Shaun Rogers was all over the field again as he had eight tackles in the first half, including a sack. He had five tackles for loss in the first half. Rogers finished with nine tackles, while LB D'Qwell Jackson led the team with 11 tackles and a sack.

Special Day: K Phil Dawson kicked a career best 54-yard field goal with three seconds left in the first half. The kick was the fourth longest in Browns' history. Steve Cox kicked a 60-yarder for the record.

Jamal Time: RB Jamal Lewis had 10 carries for 20 yards in the first half and finished with just 49 yards on 19 carries.

Braylon's Time: WR Braylon Edwards had four receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown. However, in the fourth quarter, Edwards dropped what would've been at least a 60-yard play as he beat DB Evan Oglesby and Anderson put the ball right there but Edwards couldn't hang on. It was his 12th drop of the season.

Steinbach Hurt: OL Eric Steinbach injured his ribs and was questionable. He was replaced by OL Seth McKinney.

KO No. 5: KR Josh Cribbs returned his fifth kickoff for a touchdown as he raced 92 yards after the Ravens' first score. Cribbs had returns for yards. Cribbs had a 32 yard punt return that set up a touchdown by Braylon Edwards. Cribbs also was in on several tackles on coverage teams. Cribbs had seven kickoff returns for 237 yards, while three punt returns for 41 to give him 278 return yards.

Curious Call: On the Ravens' first possession, the Browns declined a holding penalty and let the Ravens kick a 41-yard field goal. K Matt Stover has had trouble kicking long field goals and accepting the penalty would've placed the Ravens in a third-and-21 from the 34. However, by declining the penalty the Ravens were able to get the field goal. In the second quarter, the Ravens had a fourth down on the Browns' 34 and they punted. The next time they had the ball they punted from the Browns' 36.

Bad Start: The Browns gained one yard on their first possession, with a one yard run by RB Jamal Lewis on first down and then two incomplete passes by QB Derek Anderson. The poor offensive series was followed by a false start and then a 20-yard punt by P Dave Zastudil and an illegal procedure penalty by S Michael Adams. The Ravens started at the Browns' 42. The Browns had two penalties on the first four plays of the game, while having just one the entire game a week ago. Anderson finished 17-of-33 for 219 yards with two touchdowns and a key interception. He was sacked once and finished with a 80.2 rating.

K2 Starts: After missing last week's game with a suspension—that was later rescinded—TE Kellen Winslow started. Winslow caught a pass on the second series for 15 yards and a first down. Winslow had a false start penalty a few plays later and after a sack, the Browns turned the ball over. DB Sean Jones and DL Shaun Smith returned to the lineup for the Browns on defense. Winslow had three receptions for 38 yards in the first half and led the team with five receptions for 64 yards.

Mistakes: The Browns had two key turnovers that resulted in 10 points, the difference in the game and also committed eight penalties for 37 yards. The Browns' WR Syndric Steptoe fumbled the ball in the first quarter and the Ravens converted it into a field goal. However, the big blow was Anderson's interception with 2:43 to play to LB Terrell Suggs who returned it for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.

Jurevicius Announcement: WR Joe Jurevicius is scheduled to meet with the media on Monday. It is anticipated that he will be placed on season-ending injured reserve. There also is a possibility that he will announce his retirement from football.

No McGahee: RB Willis McGahee did not play, although he was active. McGahee had went for over 100 yards in three of his four games against the Browns, including the Ravens' win earlier this season. RB Ray Rice filled in and had over 150 yards.

Inactives: For the Browns: WR Donte Stallworth, LB Beau Bell, FB Lawrence Vickers, DB Hamza Abdullah, DL Ahtyba Rubin, OL Scott Young and TE Martin Rucker. Ken Dorsey is the third QB. Charles Ali started for Vickers at fullback, while Syndric Steptoe started for Stallworth. For the Ravens: K Steve Hauschka, WR Terrance Copper, CB Chris McAlister, CB Samari Rolle, , Dawan Landry, WR Marcus Smith, TE Daniel Wilcox and DL Lamar Divens. Frank Walker started for McALister, while Jim Leonhard started for Landry. Fabian Washington started for ROlle and Willie Anderson started in place of Adam Terry.
