While tonight's Northern Illinois-Kent State tilt may not seem like a big deal to anyone not associated with either school, it is apparently a big deal to the two most powerful football men in the Browns organization, The Orange & Brown Report has learned.
Vice president and general manager Phil Savage, along with director of player personnel T.J. McCreight, will take in the action on the Kent State campus, a source told The OBR. One player believed to hold the most interest for the scouting duo, the source said, is Northern Illinois defensive end Larry English.
Here's a thumbnail scouting report on English from The OBR's Brent Sobleski:
English has been a terror in the Mid American Conference the past two seasons. Last year, his junior campaign, the defensive end was named the MAC's Most Valuable Player. He certainly displays a knack for getting to the quarterback as he has 29.5 career sacks to date. English has a very quick first step, quickly shoots gaps resulting in multiple tackles for loss, and can bend the edge against offensive tackles. He also has a relentless motor and will hustle to make plays all over the field as evidenced by the 230 career tackles for a defensive lineman.
Northern Illinois' coaching staff likes to use English in a variety of ways, moving him around to different positions to take advantage of the best possible matchups. Standing 6-3 and weighing 255 pounds accompanied with good athleticism, this Husky is an ideal candidate as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Like most who are asked to make the transition, he is not asked to play from a two-point stance often by his coaching staff and can be easily overwhelmed by bigger offensive lineman.
The 6-3, 255-pound English, who is looked at as an outside linebacker in the NFL, is projected to go anywhere from the second to the fourth round of the 2009 draft.
