The OBR's John Taylor has confirmed a story in yesterday's National Football Post that Carl Smith interviewed with the Browns yesterday for their vacant QB coach position. The interview took place in Berea with Eric Mangini and Brian Daboll.
Smith arrived in Cleveland yesterday morning, and the interview took place shortly thereafter. Smith was expected to attend the Mark Sanchez press conference -- Sanchez specifically requested he be there -- yesterday morning LA time, but could not do it as the Browns' opportunity popped up and he couldn't/didn't want to reschedule.
A USC source told The OBR that Pete Carroll "fully expects to lose Smith to the Browns." Additionally, the source said, the Browns have an interest in Smith's son Tracy. The younger Smith coached tight ends at Utah State, although there is no word on what position the Browns have discussed with him.
Smith was a quarterback coach with the Browns under Butch Davis, and was with the club from 2001-2003. Since then, Smith has served as QB coach at USC (twice) and spent three years with the Jacksonville Jaguars as their offensive coordinator.
