Transcript: Adam Caplan Chat

In past years, Adam Caplan's takes on the upcoming draft have been different than the "general consensus". And they've also been largely, um, correct. Another fascinating chat transcript subscribers won't want to miss...

Adam Caplan: Hi all.

<wsu99> will BE be traded to NY soon? and for what?
Adam Caplan: WS: I'd say it's less than 50-50 he gets traded as of now.
Adam Caplan: That could change at any time.,
Adam Caplan: The interest in him isn't as great as you might think.
Adam Caplan: Teams are trying to figure out why he had so many drops last season.

<clebrowns80> Adam, with two weeks to the draft to you have a better sense if the browns will keep both da and quinn?
Adam Caplan: CLE: The problem is there's not much interest in either of them, so as of now, I expect both to be there in camp.

<dapound> If Braylon remains a Brown this year will they franchise him next season
Adam Caplan: DA: I can't see franchising him unless he has a big year.

<clebrowns80> Adam, I thought Denver was interested in Quinn and Cleveland wasn't interested in moving him?
Adam Caplan: CLE: Browns called DEN about Cutler and offered Quinn, DEN was mildly interested, but it never got to more than that.
Adam Caplan: DEN had no interest for less than two firsts
Adam Caplan: so it wasn't going to happen

<Grover71> I have to think Det is going to take an OL with their #1. They were almost dead last in Sacks allowed last year...they will get a rookie QB killed
Adam Caplan: GR: I still think it will be Stafford at #1, would be shocked if it was Sanchez
Adam Caplan: one team said they had a second round trade on Sanchez
Adam Caplan: and it's not a team that needs a Q B so I think it's true

<wsu99> what direction do you see the browns going at #5?
Adam Caplan: WSU: Curry, OT, WR

<dapound> So Adam, we are on the clock, Who is our pick?
Adam Caplan: DA: I usually know 1-2 weeks before

<ramllov> Which OT?
Adam Caplan: RAM: They'd love to have Jason Smith, but he won't be there

<wsu99> what are the chances curry falls to the browns?
Adam Caplan: WSU: Definitely possible
Adam Caplan: he drops

<Grover71> Will St. Louis take Smith?
Adam Caplan: GR: If they don't, I'd be shocked
Adam Caplan: man do they need a LT

<manoa1> do you think they will make a play at alex mack?
Adam Caplan: MAN: Mack is a late first rounder at best

<boozer2> is seattle really considering a qb at 4
Adam Caplan: BO: They are interested in a QB early, that I know, they looked hard last year at Flacco and Henne I'm told.

<ramllov> Adam, is Curry falling in this draft like Orakpo? Is there that much difference in the OLBs, there appear to be a good quantity of very good OLBs.
Adam Caplan: RAM: Not sure what you mean, Orakpo is where he should be. I ignore those who say players are falling.
Adam Caplan: Most have nothing to base it on.

<dogsqb13> are there not bigger needs than OT?
Adam Caplan: DOG: For CLE? RT badly
Adam Caplan: But that could come later
Adam Caplan: But if Jason Smith is there, that's an interesting issue
Adam Caplan: Monroe can play RT

<ramllov> Adam do you like Orakpo for the Browns with the 5th pick?
Adam Caplan: RAM: Not at #5

<ramllov> Like I said Orakpo is falling
Adam Caplan: RAM: Again, what are you referring to, no one with any clue said he was going at #5

<dogsqb13> Can we tie up that much $$ in the OL?
Adam Caplan: DOG: The right side is a big problem
Adam Caplan: they have to get two young OLs out of this draft
Adam Caplan: guard and tackle
Adam Caplan: they have no developmental OLs

<ramllov> It would appear the Browns could get a good RT with the 36th pick
Adam Caplan: Ram: Phil Loadholt is possible
Adam Caplan: solid option at RGT
Adam Caplan: RT

<manoa1> if one of the top qb's are available do you think the dawgs will bite?
Adam Caplan: MAN: I could see in rounds 4-6, Hoyer
Adam Caplan: in round 5
Adam Caplan: they do like him

<mes78> Don't the Womack and St. Clair signings fulfill one of those OL needs?
Adam Caplan: MES: Again, they need youth there
Adam Caplan: those guys are stopgaps

<wsu99> are they interested in any rb's on the first day
Adam Caplan: WSU: They have to get younger there too
Adam Caplan: but not as great a need as other positions
Adam Caplan: I don't see a RB being an impact player this season
Adam Caplan: they do need to eventually replace Lewis though

<clebrowns80> Adam, could Raji be an option at 5?
Adam Caplan: CLE: Great fit scheme wise
Adam Caplan: he can play nose of DE (5-technique)

<Grover71> What is the chance the Browns trade out of #5?
Adam Caplan: GR: Problem is teams don't want to trade up
Adam Caplan: unless someone falls

<dogsqb13> Any more on DEN looking to move up to get a QB
Adam Caplan: DOG: They may go for a developmenal QB as the draft progresses, but their D is terrible and they changed scheme
Adam Caplan: so they have to get players to fit

<ramllov> Adam, do you see Andre Smith, OT or G and do you see him going to Cincinnati or SF?
Adam Caplan: RAM: CIN has to get younger and better on their OL

<Pazienza> Do Raji's off field issues concern you?
Adam Caplan: PAZ: Seems like that SI story is wrong, but all teams will check deep into his past

<Grover71> 1,0any chance we see Lawyer Milloy at Safety next year?
Adam Caplan: GR: I could see Milloy signing with a team closer to training camp

Adam Caplan: BTW, Browns worked out another big WR, Lee Robinson
Adam Caplan: they are looking for size at WR
Adam Caplan: Barden as I noted last week they like too

<dogsqb13> Whats the lowest pick you think GK/EM would take for DA....3rd, 4th, 5th?
Adam Caplan: Dogs: I could see a team getting a conditional 4th up to a second
Adam Caplan: but again, it's not likely interest is there now

<Pazienza> Is Maulaluga (?sp) an option at #5?
Adam Caplan: PAZ: Can't see it
Adam Caplan: that's too early
Adam Caplan: that's a trade down option

<cpross> they looking for size b/c a Braylon trade is imminent?
Adam Caplan: CP: I wouldn't say that just yet.

<Grover71> Any thoughts on Patrick Turner from USC?
Adam Caplan: GR: Big possession WR who is really slow
Adam Caplan: watched tape of him last week
Adam Caplan: he can't win many battles

<Grover71> Mike Williams
Adam Caplan: GR: USC has a history of slow WRs
Adam Caplan: Turner needs to take benches off his back
Adam Caplan: lol

Adam Caplan: They also like David Veikune of Hawaii
Adam Caplan: possible third rounder
Adam Caplan: OLB
Adam Caplan: rush guy

<ramllov> Adam do you see a DE being drafted by the Browns>
Adam Caplan: RAM: They will look for depth there
Adam Caplan: but OLB rusher is more important

<cpross> what the heck are we gonna do at Safety?
Adam Caplan: CP: I'd expect a FS veteran later and a rookie
Adam Caplan: there to challenge
Adam Caplan: Early guys they like are Chung
Adam Caplan: Will Moore
Adam Caplan: and Delmas
Adam Caplan: all are second-third rounders

<clebrowns80> Adam, do you know which qb the browns like better between quinn or anderson?
Adam Caplan: CLE: It has no bearing on anything really, but they know that Quinn has more trade value.

<ramllov> Adam what is your opinion on Will Moore, he is either high of middle round, various comments on him.
Adam Caplan: RAM: Very inconsistent, that's the problem

<johndq> do you see the browns using Harrison more this year
Adam Caplan: JOHN: $1 million question, but it comes down to the new coaching staff and how he does in camp
Adam Caplan: no one can really answer that now

<ramllov> Adam what did you think about Sean Jones, will the Browns really miss him?
Adam Caplan: RAM: They backed off after his knee didn't get better
Adam Caplan: so they did the right thing
Adam Caplan: thing, Philly wants to see how he does on his one-year deal

<cpross> seems like this regime has a actual plan as opposed to pieces thrown around like Savage seemed to do...thoughts?
Adam Caplan: CP: the thing they can't do is give bad contracts again
Adam Caplan: like Savage did, looked like I was correct in saying he had no idea what he was doing in regard to the cap
Adam Caplan: go give guaranteed roster bonuses is a joke

<ramllov> Adam, who is the better right tackle for the Browns, the new guy or Shaffer?
Adam Caplan: RAM: Shaffer you would think
Adam Caplan: St. Clair did a great job last year, but he's been a backup for most of his career.

<ramllov> Adam, have your heard anything about Ryan Tucker, is he going to start and is he healthy now?
Adam Caplan: RAM: They are expecting him to compete for the RT job

<Grover71> 1,0If they are looking at bigger WR's does that mean Paul Hubbard will get a good look
Adam Caplan: GR: Hubbard is a complete unknown

<cpross> per the cap - wasn't that Trip McCracken's specialty or did PS over-ride him....gosh that was bad
Adam Caplan: CP: Savage made the calls

<GoofBoy> Adam, and more insight on the 5 in 50 rumor?
Adam Caplan: GOOF: What are you referring to?

<GoofBoy> Browns looking to acquire 5 picks in the first 50.
Adam Caplan: GOOF: If they are smart, they will look to acquire more picks, they have so many holes to fill, I will be interested to see how

<ramllov> He seemed to perform better at RG? Well, he never could handle the speed rusher on the right side.
Adam Caplan: RAM: I think he competes at G and RT, but RT makes more sense because no way St. Clair can be counted on unless they draft a RT

<J99DAWG> Adam, back to Quinn. It has been said here on OBR that the Browns have not shopped Quinn, or are not actively shopping him. You said that they called Denver and indeed offered him to them. Are the Browns looking to move him?
Adam Caplan: J99: I have no idea what it out there, I can only go on what I'm told.
<J99DAWG> k thanks
Adam Caplan: j99: Bottom line is Quinn wasn't going to DEN
Adam Caplan: I will be interested though to see if teams call for Quinn during draft weekend

<ramllov> Who is the RG?
Adam Caplan: Ram: Right now Womack or Hadnot I'd think

<ramllov> Adam, do you think the Browns can draft a potential starting center after the second round?
Adam Caplan: RAM: Wood or Mack
Adam Caplan: if they are there
Adam Caplan: they have to get a developmental center
Adam Caplan: who will be ready in a few years

<cpross> is Ryan Tucker even in the mix for starting position?
Adam Caplan: CP: If he's physically able I don't see why not
Adam Caplan: it's not like they have anyone better at RT or RG

<billbrasky09> what do you think of Hakeem Nicks? underrated or over?
Adam Caplan: BILL: Early second rounder late first
Adam Caplan: not sudden, but skilled
Adam Caplan: Heyward-Bey is really talented, but needs to be developed

<Grover71> 1,0Crabtree aor Mclin...are they really that close?
Adam Caplan: GR: Two different players
Adam Caplan: speed-Maclin, Crabtree-physical
Adam Caplan: If they do trade BE, then Crabtree makes a lot of sense at #5

<faine> adam, curry at 5 or trade down and get maualaga, picks?
Adam Caplan: FAine; Curry is more versatile
Adam Caplan: and fits scheme well
Adam Caplan: smart player

<ramllov> Adam, from your look at college game film, how quick or fast do you see Crabtree being?
Adam Caplan: RAM: one of the most physically gifted WRs in a while
Adam Caplan: Talked to Ron Jaworski about him last week, said one problem is he had trouble getting off of press coverage
Adam Caplan: which surprised me

<Grover71> 1,0can you see both Edwards and Crabtree on the same team?
Adam Caplan: GR: Too similar

<ramllov> Is he a 4.5or 4.6 or does it really matter with his skill set?
Adam Caplan: RAM: He plays to mid 4.5s

<Grover71> 1,0how about Robiskie?
Adam Caplan: GR: Solid possession WR

<wsu99> is Crabtree anywhere near the prospect Calvin Johnson was?
Adam Caplan: WSU: Two different players
Adam Caplan: All: Have to run, we'll go 45 mins next week
Adam Caplan: later
