Lane's Depth Chart: Week Two

Lane Adkins on how the players are really stacking up as the pre-season heads into the stretch. Who's lining up for shots at starting jobs, and who's in danger of being pushed off the train?

Through two full weeks of traning camp practice sessions, the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns has been moving players and changing their roles on a consistent basis.

Rotating players with different units and multiple positions enables this staff the opportunity to gauge not only the ability of a player, but expose players to becoming increasingly versatile.

Based on the rotational situations, the reps taken by each player with a respective unit -- here is the initial training camp depth chart based on observation and charting of players at positions, reps, and camp progress.

OFFENSE

QB - Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Brett Ratliff, Richard Bartel
(I'd be greatly surprised if Quinn does not win the job coming out of camp. Anderson's inconsistency hampers his solid work in camp. Ratliff does well but is not starter material at this time.)

RB - Jamal Lewis, Jerome Harrison, James Davis, Noah Herron
(Lewis is the starter, but the young guns are pushing the veteran)

FB - Lawrence Vickers, Charles Ali
(Vickers is one of the best blocking FB's in the league)

TE - Robert Royal, Steve Heiden, Aaron Walker, Martin Rucker, John Madsen
(Royal and Heiden are solid, Walker has had a solid camp, while Rucker and Madsen have been disappointing.)

WR - Braylon Edwards, Mike Furrey, Josh Cribbs, David Patten, Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie, Lance Leggett, Paul Hubbard, Jordan Norwood, Paul Raymond (Syndric Steptoe - injured / Donte Stallworth - suspended)
(The unknown role of Patten combined with Furrey's solid camp could shake up the depth landscape, with Cribbs also factoring in. This position is in constant change.)

LT - Joe Thomas, Isaac Sowells
(After Thomas, depth is questionable and Steinbach has taken reps at LT along with St. Clair and Foster)

LG - Eric Steinbach, Dustin Fry, Fred Weary (Rex Hadnot - injured)
(Hadnot's injury only solidifies Steinbach's place -- and it shouldn't have been an issue to start with.)

C - Hank Fraley, Alex Mack
(The organization expects Mack to rise to the challenge and dethrone Fraley)

RG - Floyd Womack, Ryan Tucker, Kurt Quarterman
(Womack is having a very good camp)

RT - John ST. Clair, George Foster, Branndon Braxton
(Ryan Tucker could be a factor here. St. Clair has done well, Foster has not and Braxton is raw)

DEFENSE

LDE - Kenyon Coleman, C.J. Mosley, Santonio Thomas
(Coleman is a system player and plays the role well. Mosley is a gamer and has been solid. Thomas should stick due to his experience and the Browns lack of depth.)

NT - Shaun Rogers, Ahtyba Rubin, Melila Purcell, Adam Hoppel
(Rogers and Rubin are set, Purcell and Hoppel are in jeopardy.)

RDE - Robaire Smith, Corey Williams, Louis Leonard
(A healthy Smith has been solid, while Williams has been relatively average. Leonard lacks consistency but provides depth.)

LOLB - David Bowens, Alex Hall, Phil Hunt
(Bowens and Hall, while Hunt plays specials and could land a role. (Ed. Note: Hunt was waived on Tuesday by the Browns)

LILB - Eric Barton, David Veikune, Leon Williams, Blake Costanzo
(After Barton and Veikune, the others are in a precarious position)

RILB - D'Qwell Jackson, Kaluka Maiava, Beau Bell
(After Jackson, the depth is questionable, Maiava is a rookie, while Bell has been slow to react throughout camp.)

ROLB - Kamerion Wimbley, Titus Brown, Marcus Benard
(After Wimbley, either Brown or Benard could play themselves onto the roster)

CB - Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald, Rod Hood, Brandon Anderson, Corey Ivy, Coye Francies, Hank Poteat, Gerald Lawson
(After the first three listed here, the remaining spots are up for grabs as the youth at the position has been working well in camp.)

S - Abe Elam, Brodney Pool, Mike Adams, Hamza Abdullah, Nick Sorensen, Bret Lockett
(No question Elam and Pool are the starters, Adams is a solid versatile depth player, while the remaining three all are in the hunt for a roster position.)

P - Dave Zastudil

PK - Phil Dawson

LS - Ryan Pontbriand
