Adkins: The Real Depth Chart

Likely the only member of the media who charts rotations during camp practices, Lane Adkins has his put together his estimate about how the Browns depth chart -really- stacks up. Required reading for hard-core Browns fans...

Through three full weeks of traning camp practice sessions, the coaching staff of the Cleveland Browns have been moving players and changing their roles on a consistent basis.

Rotating players with different units and multiple positions enables the staff the opportunity to gauge not only the ability of a player, but it also increases versatility.

Based on the rotational situations and the reps taken by each player with a respective unit -- here is the current training camp depth chart based on observation and charting of players at position, reps and camp progress.

QB - Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Brett Ratliff, Richard Bartel

(I'd be surprised if Quinn does not win the job coming out of camp. Anderson's inconsistency hampers his solid work in camp, but Quinn has faced many of the same struggles. Ratliff has done well in camp practices, but is not starter material at this time.)

RB - Jamal Lewis, James Davis, Jerome Harrison, Noah Herron, Chris Jennings

(Lewis is the starter, but the young guns are pushing the veteran, with rookie James Davis taking advantage of Harrison's injury issue.)

FB - Lawrence Vickers, Charles Ali

(Vickers is one of the best blocking FB's in the league.)

TE - Robert Royal, Steve Heiden, Aaron Walker, Martin Rucker, Nate Jackson (Royal has been solid, Heiden is coming around after knee surgery. Walker has had consistency issues in camp, while Rucker has been slow to develop.)

WR - Braylon Edwards, Mike Furrey, Josh Cribbs, David Patten, Mohamed Massaquoi, Brian Robiskie, Lance Leggett, Paul Hubbard, Jordan Norwood, Paul Raymond (Syndric Steptoe - injured / Donte Stallworth - suspended)

(The unknown role of Patten combined with Furrey's solid camp could shake up the depth landscape, with Cribbs also factoring in. This position is in constant change. [Ed. Note: Raymond was waived on Monday, August 24)

LT - Joe Thomas, Isaac Sowells

(After Thomas, depth is questionable and Steinbach has taken reps at LT along with John St. Clair and Sowells.)

LG - Eric Steinbach, Rex Hadnot - is injured but expected to be ready early in the season. Kurt Quarterman

(Hadnot's injury only solidifies Steinbach's place -- and it shouldn't have been an issue to start with.)

C - Alex Mack, Hank Fraley, Dustin Fry

(The rookie has been progressing and appears primed to replace Fraley as the starter. Fry has earned reps at center and LG and has displayed ability and progress in camp.)

RG - Floyd Womack, Fred Weary, Pat Murray, Corey Hilliard

(Womack is having a good camp)

RT - John St. Clair, Ryan Tucker,

(St. Clair has been getting the majority of 1st team reps, while Tucker has missed a handful of practice sessions. Tucker is still in the hunt at RG.)

DE - Kenyon Coleman, C.J. Mosley, Louis Leonard

(Coleman is a system player and plays the role well. Mosely is a gamer and has been solid. Leonard lacks consistency but provides depth.)

NT - Shaun Rogers, Ahtyba Rubin, Adam Hoppel

(Rogers and Rubin are set, Hoppel is a long-shot)

DE - Robaire Smith, Corey Williams, Santonio Thomas, Brian Schaefering

(A healthy Smith has been solid, while Williams has been relatively average. Thomas should stick due to experience and lack of depth.)

OLB - David Bowens, Alex Hall, Marcus Benard

(Bowens and Hall could be a rotating duo for the Browns in 2009)

ILB - Eric Barton,David Veikune, Robert McCune, Blake Costanzo

(After Barton and Veikune, the others are in a precarious position. )

ILB - D'Qwell Jackson, Leon Williams Kaluka Maiava, Beau Bell,

(After Jackson, the depth is questionable. Williams has come on of late and could provide depth, while Maiava is a rookie, and Bell has been slow to react throughout camp.)

OLB - Kamerion Wimbley, Titus Brown,

(After Wimbley, either Brown or Benard could play themselves onto the roster)

CB - Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald, Rod Hood, Brandon Anderson, Corey Ivy, Coye Francies, Hank Poteat, Gerald Lawson

(After the first three listed here, the remaining spots are up for grabs as the youth at the position has been working well in camp.)

S - Abe Elam, Brodney Pool, Mike Adams, Hamza Abdullah, Nick Sorensen, Bret Lockett

(No question Elam and Pool are the starters, Adams is a solid versatile depth player, while the remaining three all are in the hunt for a roster position.)

P - Dave Zastudil

PK - Phil Dawson

LS - Ryan Pontbriand
