Pre-Season Ends: Bears 26, Browns 23

A quarterback competition was nowhere to be found as the Browns and Bears reached deep into their benches...

Everyone was waiting to see who Eric Mangini was going to have start in the preseason finale with the Bears.

Well, they're still waiting as most of the starters didn't even play, including quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.

Brett Ratliff started at quarterback and after a bad start put 10 points on the board and the Browns had a 13-6 lead at halftime.

However, the Bears prevailed 26-20, and the Browns finished the preseason at 2-2.

The game started badly for the Browns as Ratliff was intercepted on the first play as he was trying to hit Brian Robiskie when Zachary Bowman intercepted it on the Browns' 44. The Bears moved to the 25 and Robbie Gould kicked a field goal with 11:01 to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

After the auspicious start, Ratliff led the Browns on a 73-yard drive for a touchdown after the Bears' score. Ratliff hit rookie Mohamed Massaquoi from six-yards out with 5:40 to play in the first quarter to make it 7-3. The Browns had the ball nine plays and took 5:21 off the clock.

Ratliff started as he hit Aaron Walker for 17 yards to the 44. On the next play, James Davis broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and picked up 21 yards to the Bears' 35. He followed that with a nine-yard run.

On third down and nine, Ratliff hit Noah Herron on a screen for 12 yards to the Bears' eight. Ratliff then hit Massaquoi on a quick slant over the middle and he dove in for the touchdown.

The teams traded punts until Mike Adams intercepted a deep pass from Caleb Hanie near the 15 and returned it to the 40. Richard Bartel hit Brian Robiskie for 28 yards on the first play to the Bears' 34. Bartel hit David Patten on third down to the18.

After two short gains by Chris Jennings, on third-and-4, Bartel hit Lance Leggett for a first down to the five. The Browns had two short runs to the three and on third down and goal, Bartel tried to hit Leggett in the end zone, but it was incomplete. Dawson capped the drive as he hit a field goal from 20 yards with 8:13 to play in the first half to make it 10-3.

After stopping the Bears on the next possession, the Browns moved to the Bears' 33 and Dawson kicked a 51-yar field goal to make it 13-3 with 3:40 to play in the first half. Much of the load on the drive was taken by Chris Jennings, who had a run of 13 yards. He had 11 carries for 41 yards in the first half.

The Bears made it 13-6 with 1:08 left as Gould hit a 40-yard field goal. Hanie hit Garrett Wolfe for 10 yards and then the big play was a 43-yard pass to Johnnie Knox.

The Bears took the second half kickoff and moved right down the field and capped the drive as Hanie hit Michael Gaines for a 25-yard touchdown to tie the score at 13 with 11:58 to play in the third quarter. The big play was an 18-yard reception by Wolfe. Gaines got behind rookie linebacker David Veikune.

After the Bears' score, Gerard Lawson had a return of 65 yards to the Bears' 42, but a holding call on Dustin Fry moved them back into their own territory.

After the penalty, the Browns were faced with fourth-and-two and Bartel threw deep to David Patten, who beat former Brown Rod Hood for the completion of 29 yards to the two. On the next play, Bartel hit Robiskie on a quick slant for an apparent touchdown. However, the played was reviewed and it was ruled that Robiskie was down just short of the goal line. On the next play, Bartel snuck in for the touchdown to make it 20-13 with 8:20 to play in the third quarter. The Browns went 42 yards in six plays consuming 3:38.

The Bears received a 50-yard kickoff return by Johnnie Knox and moved to the Browns' 18 before being faced with fourth-and-two. Brett Basanez hit former Browns receiver Brandon Rideau to tie the score at 20-20 with 5:07 to play in the third quarter as Rideau beat Coye Francies.

After stopping the Browns, Knox took the punt from Dave Zastudil out to the 41, but an illegal procedure penalty on Tra Battle was tacked on and the Bears started at the 46. After  a couple of first downs, the Bears stalled at the Browns 30 an Gould hit the 47-yard field goal to give the Bears a 23-20 lead with 13:43 to play.

Trailing 23-20, Ratliff re-entered the game and the Browns went three-and-out as Ratliff was sacked on third down.

After the Browns punt, the Bears moved quickly to the Browns' 24. A couple of short plays put the Bears in a third-and-2 situation at the 16. Marcus Benard tackled Basanez on what looked to be a broken play. Gould tacked on a 39-yard field goal to make it 26-20 with 7:20 to play.

After another three-and-out, D.J. Moore fumbled the punt and Brian Robiskie recovered at the Bears' 36. Ratliff hit Lance Leggett for a first down to the 25. Jennings picked up six on first down to the 19 and then Jennings was dropped for a loss to make it third-and-9. Ratliff hit Jennings on a screen for nine yards.

Marked just short of the first down, the Browns elected to go for it on fourth down. Ratliff tried to sneak for the first down and made it by the nose of the football. On first and 10 from the 15, Jordan Norwood couldn't hang on to the pass that was behind him. Norwood dropped a wide open pass on second down. Faced with third-and-10, Ratliff threw incomplete to Jennings. On fourth-and-10, the Browns decided to kick a field goal from 33 yards by Dawson to make it 26-23 with 2:21 to play.

The Browns had the Bears at third-and-7 from the 37 and Basanez hit Joaquin Iglesias as he got behind  Francies and picked up the first down to the Browns' 34. From there, the Bears were able to run the clock out as the Browns were out of time outs.
