More Snooping Around DTs… Hmmm…

The Browns seem to be spending a lot of time taking a look at defensive tackles for a club with Shaun Rogers and Ahtyba Rubin on the roster.

Unless, of course, one of those players might leave the roster at some point. Nah… that can't be it.

Earlier today, we relayed the latest from the Purdue Pro Day that had the Browns working out a defensive tackle after the organized activities.

Now we're told that Sirius Radio's NFL channel just had an interview with Torrell Troup, DT, Central Florida. One of the teams most interested in him at the Combine? The Cleveland Browns.

Maybe, for some reason, it's all an elaborate smokescreen, with the Browns looking interested in mid-round defensive tackles in order to throw off the opposition. Come to think of it, we're sure that's all it is. Yeah.

Bradford Pushes His Pro Day

Several weeks ago, we predicted that Joe Haden wasn't the lock mock drafts and analysts said he was for the Browns pick in the seventh spot. The reason? Mock drafts and analysts are never right about what a team will do that early.

While Haden to the Browns is certainly a possibility, most of the recent buzz concerns the Browns implied desire to trade up to draft QB Sam Bradford, considered to be the cream of a relatively week quarterback crop. Trade scenarios from the outright loony (I was told of one blog that had us dealing Joe Thomas) to more commonsense "deal up if Bradford starts dropping" scenarios.

All of which is moot if the Rams decide they want him, as some stories have suggested.

In related news. Bradford has pushed his Pro Day back to March 29, so that it doesn't conflict with the NFL meetings.

Brandt Tells Holmgren: Colt McCoy > Joe Montana

I didn't hear this myself, but if I had, I might still be passed out unconscious.

Our friend Jon, who runs Patriots Insider, told me about a half-hour ago that QB Colt McCoy was on Sirius NFL Radio's "Late Hits", which features the well-regarded if somewhat James Lipton-esque Gil Brandt.

At the end of the interview, Brandt reportedly offered the following (paraphrasing from radio and email):

"The guy who retired from coaching and heads the Cleveland Browns now asked me who I'd take… I told him if you draft Colt McCoy and run the West Coast Offense, you're going to forget about Joe Montana".

Left unspecified by Brandt is whether the Montana memory-loss would be caused by McCoy's history-rewriting performance or blunt head trauma caused by tossed bricks when Browns fans realized we just used our first round pick on Colt McCoy.

We kid. Brandt has an undeniable track record and eye for talent. Holmgren undoubtedly takes his input very seriously.

Browns Scouting Another QB

The Cleveland Browns were  in attendance at Fordham's Pro Day, according to Scout.com's Chris Steuber. Their target? QB John Skelton, ranked in the Top Ten of quarterbacks available in this year's draft.

Also worth noting: Northwestern QB Mike Kafka was very impressive in his Pro Day earlier this week. Kafka has attributes which could fit well into a West Coast Offense. We haven't confirmed a Browns scout was there, but it seems very likely.

The Daily Blog Adventure, Part 2

The OBR Daily Blog started because of two "lost weekends".

Over the last two weekends, I've been pretty much tied to my computer updating "blogs" for Scout. The first was during the combine, the second was during the weekend of free agency, where six publishers from across Scout took turns updating the "blogs".

Response to these articles was unreal, with links being set up to them everywhere and page views through the roof. Readers hit them over and over, setting traffic records for the NFL on Scout.

Of course, my first thought was "We should do this for the OBR, every day". But there was a problem: The "blogs" weren't blogs. They were articles we kept open all day, adding HTML by hand and republishing. Only one person could update them at a time, it was slow, and just wasn't doable on a daily basis.

So, in order to provide Browns fans with the constant stream of news and updates they want, we had to build entirely new technology on the back end.

Over the last week, I've been working on the technology to make these blogs hum, tweaking them constantly and fixing bugs. Yesterday, we added mirroring for our Twitter account, so you don't have to constantly watch our Twitter feed to get the latest from news we toss out quickly there... you can just watch this article when you come to the OBR if you're not a Twitterholic.

Newswire integration was also added yesterday, allowing for links to be posted into the Daily Blog every hour or so, if new links have been added. Hopefully, this will let visitors enjoy our Twitter and Wire features without having to dig around the site to find the links.

Because we've been focusing on cleaning up and enhancing the Daily Blog over the last couple of days, most of our content has been here. Starting today, we'll return to our normal publishing schedule, with multiple front-page stories joining the Daily Blog's stream of updates. The Daily Blog is another site feature, not the end-all, be-all or a brand new format for all our news. We hope you enjoy it.
