OBR Newswire updates for April 2nd through April 3rd

These are links from the OBR Newswire for April 2nd through April 3rd:

  • Plain Dealer - Shaun Rogers faces a precarious future - In a case of ostentatious oversight and common sense abdication, Rogers, the team's nose tackle (as of this moment) showed up at the airport with a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his carry-on bag.
  • ABJ - Browns consider using seventh pick in draft on safety Eric Berry - Getting Berry at No. 7 is not a certainty for the Browns. The Redskins are considering him at No. 4 and the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 5. Former Browns coach Romeo Crennel, now the Chiefs' defensive coordinator, ran Berry's pro-day workout, cut short when Berry sprained his left big toe.
  • ABJ - Browns' Rogers apologizes for arrest - Nose tackle Shaun Rogers apologized to the Browns and their fans Friday after being charged with one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
  • ABJ - Trade with Eagles could net 2 starters - Eric Berry, c'mon down!? A Friday trade with the Philadelphia Eagles may have brought the Browns' two starters and perhaps cleared the way for them to draft Tennessee safety Berry, if he's available when they select seventh overall.

Easily Frightened, but They Return in Larger Numbers

Shortly after chasing a Yinzermobile out of my neighborhood through aggressive shaking of my curmudgeonly fist (see update below), black Yinzercopters were seen swarming over a nearby airport. Once again, the fist was deployed, and the Yinzercopters fled quickly.

How the yinzers got such nice copters, I have no idea. I'm guessing some sort of wild stunt by those crazy Duke boys played on the corrupt and overfed local MiB office.

Free Agent Database Updated

Oh yes, yours truly has slamified (media term) an update into the infamous Scout.com free agent database. Lots of updates there, including Flozell Adams, Alex Brown, and Ken Hamlin becoming available. And Chris Gocong becoming not available.

Anyone have a spare iPad they aren't using? Must... resist... hype...

Please Stop The Confounded Nerdery

You may be wondering why it's noon and I haven't updated the site yet today.

Or, you probably aren't, either way.

What I'm busy doing is organizing tons of files and ideas I have stashed away all over the place for things like a mobile version of this blog, an OBR Chrome extension, etc, etc. All these sorts of nerdy ideas that I've accumulated over the last couple of months, along with various files and links and badly-conceived to-do lists. They're scattered all over the internets in various documents and so forth, and I'm trying to consolidate everything in (the awesome) Evernote app and put all the to-do lists in Nozbe, an on-line system that integrates with Evernote. GTD. Getting Things Done, don't cha know.

The hope is that this will help me get stuff done. Yeah. Whatever.

There are a couple of minor blog updates we have today - nothing huge as of this moment, and I'll slam those in when time allows. If news breaks, we're tracking it and will slam it in. If you see anything, feel free to tip me off.

Also, I saw a car with Pa. license places and a Pittsburgh Steelers bumper sticker wandering around in my dullish east-of-Cleveland suburb. A vicious curmudgeonly shaking of my fist in his direction appears to have had the desired effect, as he quickly drove out of our neighborhood. After seeing the fist, I'm sure he went back to Pittsburgh. I've scared away my Yinzer today... have you?

Browns Bringing in RB Jahvid Best

I know I undoubtedly pimp the value of being a subscriber too much, but sometimes I write about what we do because we're just proud of it.

So, apologies in advance.

For the second time today a news headline bring sort of a shrug from OBR subscribers because they new it was coming. In this case, it's the impending visit of RB Jahvid Best of California. Subscribers were told last week that the Browns had an interest in Best at the position.

Their interest is understable. Best is the third-ranked running back in this year's draft by Chris Steuber, and gets five stars from Scout.com's draft guru. Best is considered a low-first, high-second round pick. Best has had some durability issues.

For a prospect profile of Best, click here Subscriber Article.

As long as I'm linking lots of video today, enjoy Best running for a 70-yard TD for Cal, and then cringe as he injures his neck against Oregon State last November.

Eagles Press Release on Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles today announced they have traded CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong to the Cleveland Browns for LB Alex Hall, a 4th round draft choice (105th overall) and a 5th round draft choice (137th overall) in 2010.

"Sheldon Brown has been a very good football player for the Eagles over the last eight years," said head coach Andy Reid. "He's a good person, a legitimate tough guy and he'll do a good job helping the Browns. Chris did a good job converting from defensive end to linebacker and helped us win a lot of football games. We wish both of them all of the best."

Added general manager Howie Roseman, "Sheldon and Chris have been nothing but professionals on and off the field during their tenure in Philadelphia and we wish them all the best as they continue their careers in Cleveland. Alex Hall is a big, athletic linebacker who we've had our eyes on over the last couple of years and he'll have a chance to compete at the SAM linebacker spot."

The 6-5, 250-pound Hall played in 30 games (2 starts) for the Cleveland Browns and recorded 30 tackles and three sacks, while adding 18 stops on special teams. His sacks came in three consecutive games during the early portion of his rookie campaign of 2008. Hall was a 7th round draft choice of the Browns.

A native of Springdale, MD, Hall finished as the all-time leader in sacks at St. Augustine's College with 26. He also posted 156 total tackles, including 51 for a loss, four fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.

With the acquisition of Cleveland's 5th round pick, the Eagles now have 10 total selections in this year's draft: 1st round (24th overall), 2nd round (55), 3rd round (70, from Seattle), 3rd round (87), 4th round (105, from Cleveland), 4th round (121), 5th round (137, from Cleveland), 6th round (200, from Indianapolis), 7th round (243, compensatory pick), and 7th round (244, compensatory pick)

Add the Name Sheldon Brown to Eagles Rumors

We've been reporting on the possibility of Chris Gocong coming to the Browns for weeks. As with Rob Sims, you're probably sick of hearing about it for now.

And, for that, we apologize.

Oh, wait, no we don't. False alarm.

Anyhow, Gocong's potential availability finally eked into the mainstream media a couple of days ago, thanks to our friend Aaron Wilson at the National Football Post.

Now, you can add the name of CB Sheldon Brown to the trade possibilities, per Clark Judge of CBS Sportsline.

The addition of Brown would be a very big deal indeed to the Cleveland Browns, impacting their draft strategy significantly and solidifying the cornerback position for the team. Brown had an excellent season in 2009, even though it was played under the cloud of new contract demands. Brown has not participated in the Eagles off-season workouts to date, a sure sign of continuing contract displeasure.

Naturally, including Brown pushes up the price of the package significantly, despite the corner being in his eighth season.

If the Browns and Eagles can get past the financial impasse with Brown, and if Judge is right, the team has a change to make the significant off-season move in their backfield that fans have been waiting to see.

CB Devin McCourty to Visit Browns Next Week

We will have a longer story on McCourty later today, but Scout.com's Chris Steuber has told us that the Rutgers CB has scheduled a visit with the Cleveland Browns for next week.

McCourty's visit is interesting from a couple of different angles. As the second-rated corner in this year's draft, per Steuber, the Browns need to do their due diligence on McCourty and get to know the potential top pick better.

Those with a more conspiratorial bent might consider McCourty to be relevant primarily in a trade-down scenario, as the corner is generally perceived to be a logical selection somewhere between slots 10-20 in the draft.

Andre Rison is Back in Football!

Well, sorta.

Fifteen years after managing to annoy every Cleveland Browns fan on the planet with his poor play and words, one-time Art Modell debt generator and Cleveland disappointment Andre Rison has returned to the game of football.

This time, it's as a high school football coach and "mentor" to high school kids at his old hometown school of Flint Northwestern. In a brief story in the Flint Journal, Rison says all the right things about his new job and about football's proper role in life.

Certainly, people change over the years. Unfortunately for Rison, no matter how much he matures and changes, many of us here in Cleveland will only remember him as an overpriced, unpleasant player who did little but generate negative headlines in the fading days of the Modell/Belichick Browns. One hopes for the sake of the students of Flint Northwestern that Rison has grown up significantly in the intervening years.
