Kiper Gives Browns Draft a C

ESPN's draft analyst thinks Haden was a good pick, Ward and Hardesty were reaches, Asante is too much of an "in the box" safety, and that McCoy was good value.

Now, if Todd McShay also dislikes the Browns picks, we can be pretty feel pretty good about the job that Holmgren and Heckert did.

Kiper, for what it's worth, gave the Ravens an "A", the Steelers a "B", and the Bengals and Browns "Cs". Translated, if you have a reputation for drafting well, you did well. If you don't, you did poorly. Or if you pick the players that Mel Kiper wanted you to pick, such as the pick of future-Hall of Fame WR Mike WIlliams by the Lions a few years ago, then you did well.

In other breaking news, draft grades the day after the draft are kind of stupid.

Positive Anecdote about %%MATCH_16%%

Take this for what it's worth, but a nice note came into my email in-box earlier:

Barry, my nephew played at ASU with Shawn. He can't say enough good things about him: work ethic, head on straight, best lineman there regardless of the position he was playing at the time. Apparently, he won a Mr %%MATCH_19%% contest for strongest Hawaiian.

OBR Newswire updates for April 21st through April 24th

These are links from the OBR Newswire for April 21st through April 24th:

  • ABJ - Browns pay primary attention to secondary - When all was said and done late Saturday afternoon and the three-day bonanza that was the 2010 NFL Draft finally wrapped up, the Browns took inventory of all they accomplished.
  • ABJ - Before nabbing McCoy, Browns work hard to secure Sam Bradford - But before McCoy became that player, Browns President Mike Holmgren described how the Browns tried to maneuver their way from No. 7 in an attempt to snatch Oklahoma's Sam Bradford with the No. 1 pick
  • MSF - Colt McCoy: Most Valuable Pick in 2010 NFL Draft - Then the Browns took a safety…and then they took a running back…and finally, with the 85th pick in the draft – some 50 picks after many people thought he'd be selected – Colt McCoy was the choice of the Cleveland Browns. And it was the best pick in terms of value in the first three rounds of the 2010 NFL Draft.
  • ABJ - Morgan could be fallback plan - In his mock draft, respected NFL writer Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News has the Browns selecting %%MATCH_17%% outside linebacker %%MATCH_14%% with the No. 7 pick tonight.
  • ABJ - Browns to miss national spotlight - Mike Holmgren's arrival as Browns president might have raised the team's profile, but apparently not with television networks that carry the NFL.

Rookie Free Agents

The signing of rookie free agents has already begun, with a handful already signing with the Browns. You can find Browns fans scouring the web for news in the Watercooler and we're tracking what we find in the Insider Blog.

Meanwhile, some words of wisdom from Howard Balzer:

Every year, there are instances where two teams announce a UDFA has agreed to terms. It's why most teams wait to announce them until the contract is actually signed. Virtually everything that happens the night of the draft are agreements and not actually signings. In a few cases each year, an agent agrees with another team, then gets a better offer and agrees to that. Meanwhile, the original team announces the agreement.

Jets Dump %%MATCH_32%%

Another player who had gotten some attention from Browns fans over the off-season has found a new home, as the Jets dump RB %%MATCH_28%% to the Seahawks in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. The Seahawks also get the Jets seventh pick.

John Scheider and Pete Carroll making a lot of changes in Seattle. Will be interesting to see if Carroll can pull that team together quickly.
