The Browns earlier today announced that they have waived the contracts of a number of players who were unlikely to make the team. Here's the organization's brief press release:
The Cleveland Browns today waived defensive backs John Bowie, Benjamin Burney and Ramzee Robinson, running back Thomas Brown, offensive lineman Jason Capizzi, linebacker Auston English and wide receiver James Robinson. In addition, the team terminated the contract of kicker Shaun Suisham.
A couple of these names are interesting. Jason Capizzi is a well-regarded offensive tackle who was believed to have been improving rapidly enough to threaten for a roster spot. DB John Bowie and RB Thomas Brown were both considered to have enough potential to merit holding onto during part of the 2009 season, but off-season additions at both of their positions made it highly unlikely they could contribute in 2009.
Suisham has kicked for several teams, most notably the Redskins, but could be cut once veteran PK Phil Dawson returned to camp. It's not possible at this point to read much into Suisham's release relative to a new Phil Dawson contract, but it clearly indicates that the team does not feel they need to hold onto Suisham as leverage.
