BEREA, Ohio—The Browns announced their moves to get down to the required 53-man roster on Saturday night at 9:14 pm, over three hours after they were required to notify the league office. With all of the cuts, there is a backlog of players going across the waiver wire, giving the Browns a chance to bring back players cut whom the Browns are hoping to bring back to the practice squad.
Released were veterans DB Brandon McDonald, DL C. J. Mosley, OL Paul Fanaika, OL Scott Kooistra, OL Pat Murray, QB Brett Ratliff, RB Chris Jennings, DB DeAngelo Smith and WR Bobby Engram. Rookies released were draft choices DB Larry Asante and DL Clifton Geathers, DL Travis Ivey, along with DB Chris Chancellor, DL Swanson Miller and DL Brian Sanford.
McDonald started 27 games since being a fifth-round draft choice in 2007. Mosley came to the Browns from the Jets and injured his leg in 2009. He finished the season on injured reserve and was on the PUP list the entire 2010 preseason.
Asante was a fifth-round draft choice this year and Geathers was a sixth-round choice this year.
On Friday, the Browns released DB Coye Francies, OL Casey Bender, OL Joel Reinders, TE Joel Gamble, WR Syndric Steptoe, WR Jake Allen and placed RB Montario Hardesty on injured reserve.
As the roster now stands, the only cornerbacks are Eric Wright, Sheldon Brown and Joe Haden. The safeties are Abe Elam, T.J. Ward, Mike Adams, who also plays cornerback, Nick Sorenson and Ray Ventrone.
The Browns kept four tight ends in Ben Watson, Evan Moore, Alex Smith and Robert Royal. They kept four running backs in Jerome Harrison, Peyton Hillis, James Davis and Lawrence Vickers. They kept three quarterbacks with Colt McCoy behind Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace.
The Browns also pulled DL Shaun Rogers off the PUP list and activated him, requiring an additional roster spot.
