Bucs' head coach Lovie Smith has stayed away from naming Mike Glennon the starter for the rest of 2014. Glennon has played better as a starter than Josh McCown did when he was in prior to his thumb injury. McCown hasn't seen the field since the injury in Week 3 at Atlanta but on Monday the 35-year old saw the practice fields for the first time since.
Part of the process for coming back off the injury was throwing the football. McCown was able to do so and Smith said his veteran quarterback looked good doing it.
“[Josh McCown] threw it fairly well today," Smith said. "For that hour-and-a-half that I was out there at practice, he threw the ball fairly well. We’re encouraged, as I said earlier, about his progress.”
Progress seems to be made but Smith has been coy about deciding what quarterback will be leading Tampa Bay's offense. Whenever that decision is made, it sounds like it will be a collective decision.
“I think all decisions are pretty easy in the end. Guys tell you exactly what you need to do, who needs to start, who needs to play, there aren’t any tough decisions in the end as I see it. I can’t wait until we get to the point where I can come in here and I can talk to you about both of our guys being healthy and ready to go. The rest of the stuff will take care of itself.”
There has been a feeling among many -- including right here on BucsBlitz.com -- that Smith would not hesitate to plug McCown back into the starting role once the team returned from the bye week. But the journeyman quarterback was one of the bigger disappointments on the team through the first three weeks of the season.
Sure there are bigger issues on the team than who will start for this week or even for the rest of the season for that matter. Putting McCown back in as the starter could set the offense back as it has been more productive under Glennon.
Smith said he'll talk more about the quarterback situation on Wednesday. However, knowing how this regime has handled the situation in the media, we probably won't know much more other than an injury report for Sunday's game.
