After a performance like the one the Bucs put forth on Sunday against the Vikings, you figured a change at quarterback was bound to happen. However, the waiving of Mike Kafka Monday afternoon wasn't what many envisioned. Sadly for the Bucs, the quarterback position, along with many other units, has underperformed this year. Head coach Lovie Smith was pretty noncommital when it came to who his starting quarterback was going to be this Sunday against the Browns.
"We’ll start practice again Wednesday like we normally do," Lovie Smith said when asked about any changes at quarterback. "I never kind of go over starting lineups or anything like that until the end of the week. If we were going to make a change, I wouldn’t talk about it an awful lot. The plan isn’t for that."
I'll make it easy for Smith when it comes to the quarterback position moving forward. Mike Glennon should be the starter. That may seem like an obvious choice but as we've seen this year, that hasn't always happened. I like Glennon as a quarterback. I think when he's had time to throw the football, he's been good. Unfortunately for Glennon and the Bucs, teams know this as well. As a result, teams are sending more guys than the Bucs offensive line can block. You're seeing Glennon over the last couple of weeks become erratic with this throws. He's starting to throw interceptions. Quite simply put, he's not playing like a starting quarterback.
Now maybe it's unfair to judge Glennon with this offensive line in front of him. But the elite quarterbacks perform with guys in their face. The really good quarterbacks get the ball out quickly. When I was watching the Steelers vs Colts Sunday afternoon, the quarterback play was elite. In the Bucs game, the quarterback play was dreadful.
I don't know if the Bucs go back to Josh McCown this weekend. I'm sure Smith knows but he's not telling right now.
"We have two quarterbacks we feel good about playing," Lovie Smith said. "Josh was able to go through practice last week. I thought Mike [Glennon] did some good things yesterday. You’d always like to have a couple of plays back. The first thing I thought about as far as improving our ball club wasn’t, ‘We’ve got to make a change at the quarterback position.’”
Smith shouldn't have to make a change at the quarterback position right now. Glennon should be the starter. The way the season is unfolding, this will be Glennon's last year starting for the Bucs. The team will be in a position to draft an elite quarterback. Until that day comes, Glennon should be given the opportunity to finish the season out.
