Bucs Closely Watching Mariota and Winston

With the recent announcement that Mike Glennon has been benched in favor of 35 year old Josh McCown, one would wonder if the Bucs have given up on Glennon as their "quarterback of the future." With potentially a high draft pick next April, the Bucs might be in position to draft a new franchise quarterback, something this franchise probably has never had.

"It is very clear they believe that they need to upgrade significantly at quarterback because they are 2nd to last in the league in total offense, they are 26th in the league in scoring offense, this team needs to make significant moves," Jason Cole of Bleacher Report said.

Franchise quarterbacks rarely become available in free agency or via trade. If the Bucs are going to acquire their first true "franchise quarterback" in their history, it would likely have to be by striking gold in the NFL draft. Cole says that's their focus right now.

"The real thinking here is that with a top 5 or top 10 pick, depending on how the team finishes, they're really looking at an opportunity to get potentially a franchise quarterback in the draft," Bleacher Report's Jason Cole said about the Bucs quarterback situation.

Obviously, Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston are the top two quarterbacks who come to mind, but Cole points out that the Bucs will do their due diligence on all possible quarterbacks to make sure the one they select can be that difference-maker.

"The Buccaneers have closely watched both of these players (Mariota and Winston) so far," Jason Cole said. "They were at the game in which Jameis Winston played against Louisville. They're going to do their research on Mariota. They are also going to look at Bryce Petty along with other quarterbacks that will be available in this draft, like Brett Hundley."

I believe this needs to be the off-season where the Bucs take a legitimate shot at acquiring either Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston. Getting one of those two quarterbacks will not only be a nice start to building a consistent winner, but also reconnect with a fan base that has completely given up on their franchise until a true quarterback is behind center.
